This is a one year top-up programme in Animation (BA Hons) which is certified by the University of Wolverhampton. The course is taught by Industry professionals with further input from visiting industry guest lecturers and workshops during the year. The course has been specifically tailored to meet the needs of the growing national animation industry and its impact at home and abroad. Students are encouraged to specialize in areas where there is good potential for employment such as 2D/3D animation, background design, modelling, game design ,character design, storyboarding and directing. The completion of a professional work placement along with the completion of a professionally produced animation project will allow for preparing graduates with the necessary technical and creative abilities to progress directly into the animation sector workplace on completion.
The main focus of the BA year is a Major Project. Three of the five modules feed into what is essentially a practical Thesis project. It is self-directed work, chosen by the student according to his/her interests and strengths. It is planned, researched, developed and produced with the guidance of tutors who are industry professionals. The students are encouraged to specialize in an animation related discipline of their choice. The college has facilities and software to support these major projects. Other modules include Employability in the Creative Industries, and Professional Animation project: this is a project with an outside client.
The course comprises of 2 semesters:
Semester 1: Professional Animation Project, Animation Research and Practice
Semester 2: Animation Production, Professional Development
Semester 1:
Animation Research and Practice module aims to develop your ability in your chosen specialization, while also developing your understanding of storytelling through the medium of a short film. The course emphasis is to nurture your independent and self-directed research, development and preparation, and is designed to develop your knowledge and skill in the practice of animated work particularly in the area of pre-production, concept development and academic research.
Professional Animation Project module enables students to create a short piece of work to a high production standard that can be used as an outstanding piece of work for your graduation show-reel.
Animation Research and Practice module involves presentation of a Major Project preparatory work developed as a full pre-production package, a blog presenting the development and concept work, and submission of 4000 word extended essay.
Semester 2:
Animation Production module is the culmination of the year's studies and will include a clear and cogent-relationship between practice and research; from your Pre-Production phase right through animation and BG production culminating in final compositing, post production and collating a press kit.
Professional Development is an opportunity for students to investigate their creative future; investigate various roles within creative industries and develop a research portfolio and action plan that strengthens knowledge and confidence when making career choices.
Participation is free for applicants meeting Springboard entry requirements.
Applicants will be expected to have a relevant BTEC HND with a minimum of 10 merits or an equivalent HETAC qualification. Applicants will be expected to submit online links to their animation work from the last three years prior to interview.
Students who have completed a FETAC Level 6 Animation will be considered if their work meets the criteria and standard for HND. This will be discussed at interview.
For applicants over the age of 21, relevant work experience in animation or in related fields will also be taken into consideration. Work will be assessed based on portfolio and interview.
An employer/college reference is essential.
All applicants should show an aptitude and commitment to the subject matter and to an intense degree year.
