About this Course

The purpose of this course is to provide the skills necessary to work as an Operator/ Quality Inspector/ Quality Technician/ Clinical Monitor/ Regulatory Officer/ Design Assurance Test Technician in a Medical Device sector company. This sector is particularly strong in Galway. This course is open to employed and unemployed people, but note that lecture hours are all day Monday and Tuesdays and half day Wednesdays from September 2017 to May 2018.

The Certificate in Medical Device Technology will consists of twelve weeks of lectures over two days each week, followed by a full-time work placement/ industrial project.

Modules undertaken are: Learning & Innovation Skills (Level 6 - 5 credits); Medical Device Technology (Level 6 - 10 credits); Current Industrial Concepts (Level 6 - 5 credits); Work Placement (Level 6 - 10 credits).

The Certificate in Quality Management consists of one day per week for 24 weeks. Modules undertaken are: Quality Management 1 (Level 7 - 10 credits); Quality Management 2 (Level 7 - 10 credits). To adequately prepare students for transitioning to employment, they will also undertake the accredited module "Transitioning to Work" (5 Credits - Level 7).

The course will be delivered in classrooms and laboratories in GMIT, Dublin Road in under 17 contact hours/week. As in previous years the course will include site visits to local medical device companies. The 2016/17 class did site visits to Boston Scientific, Medtronic and Merit Medical. Each year guest lectures from local companies (e.g. Boston Scientific, Creganna, Merit Medical) are brought in to talk to the students about working in their companies.

The remaining module is Work Placement/Project (10 credits) where GMIT will seek initially to find employment for the student directly through our many contacts in the various medical devices companies in Galway and the West of Ireland. Recruitment agencies (e.g CPL, Cregg, ICE Group) regularly contact us also for our Medical Device Technology graduates.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirement (if under 23) is a pass in the Leaving Certificate with five grades which must include English or Irish and Mathematics. All applicants at the time of application will be interviewed by staff and acceptance will be based upon performance at the interview plus prior certified or experiential learning. The interview process will seek to verify the applicants attitude to study and commitment to complete the course. It may also include mathematics/ dexterity test(s) and an assessment of the students suitability for an internship. Applications are processed on a first come first served basis so apply early.
