This course is aimed at extending and developing skill, competence and awareness of students in both the technical and management skills that are required from modern construction management professionals. There is a particular emphasis on construction related ICT and 'green' and sustainable building technologies. Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of the technologies that are used to manage and deliver the construction of low impact and near zero energy buildings. Students will also be introduced to the range of legislation, control mechanisms and standards that govern best practice in construction industry. The purpose of this programme is to provide upskilling in the current theory and practice of sustainable building technology relevant to Construction Management. There will be an emphasis on near zero carbon construction and its impact on the construction process. The programme will consist of lectures, practicals and group work. Delivery will be two and a half days per week for 20 weeks. This will be followed by a work placement of 125 hours (in March). Guest lecturers and site visits are also an integral part of the teaching and learning on this programme.
Pass in Leaving Certificate with five grades which must include English or Irish and Mathematics. GMIT also has an application policy applicable to mature students which will also be applied. GMIT adopted a policy on RPL in 2009 which is actively applied to all courses offered. Applicants will be interviewed to verify attitude to study and commitment to complete the course.
This is a great opportunity for individuals who wish to upskill and gain an accredited qualification in construction which will be recognised by employers. This programme is suitable for those who have no previous experience in the construction sector and for those who may have some expereince in entry level construction roles but have no qualification in the area. The programme will be delivered in 'block' over 2.5 days per week for 20 weeks throughout the winter months, leaving graduates available to take on part-time work over a couple of days a week over that period if necessary. This programme includes a work placement.
Graduates from this course will work in the construction sector, primarily on site but also in architect’s/engineer’s offices.
This is an ideal opportunity for people with previous construction experience to upskill in sustainable building practices relevant to current requirements and ICT skills. Roles will exist in the project management, supervisory, ICT areas of construction project management on site and also in equivalent office based areas within the industry.
This programme will be timetabled over 2.5 days per week over the academic year from September 2017 to March 2018.
