The Higher Diploma in Science (Software Development) is a one-year full-time programme in Maynooth for students who already have a level 8 qualification in a subject other than computer science or software development. The focus is on industrial software development using the Java programming language. The course includes foundational material, databases, object-oriented programming, software design, software testing mobile application and web development. The course includes a team project providing essential practice for working in a software development environment. A capstone module prepares students for Java Certification exams (1Z0-803 Java 7). A work placement module at the end of the course provides experience in putting the skills learned into practice.
To give students:
- a grounding in the fundamentals of software creation including programming, algorithm development, and software design
- knowledge of the process of software development including specification, design, implementation and testing.
- knowledge of how to develop software applications for the web and mobile devices.
- experience of team work in a group software project
- preparation for obtaining work in software companies
- opportunity to obtain programming industrial certification.
A NFQ level 8 qualification in any subject (except computer science or software engineering) or equivalent.

The Higher Diploma in Science (Software Development) is a one-year full-time programme for students who already have a level 8 qualification in a subject other than computer science or software development. It assumes no previous knowledge of computing. It includes technical software skills, a team project and work placement. It also includes preparation for industrial certification exams in Java programming.
In partnership with the Placement Office and Careers Development Centre on campus, the programme includes preparation for placement including CV writing, interview skills, team project work, project management and evaluation. In addition, industrial certification examinations are built in to the programme.
This is a full-time course, averaging 24 contact hours per week. Lectures and laboratory classes occur between 9am and 6pm, Mon - Fri.
