Last year Springboard offered thousands of places to participants in a huge range of courses but one thing that comes back time and time again from participants isn’t just what they learned from the experience but the confidence they gained from doing it.
John Devlin is one such participant. John worked as a chef for many years in both Ireland and abroad. After returning to Ireland from Australia where he lived for many years, John felt he had “lost direction”. He no longer had the passion for the job and he felt he needed a change. And so he discovered Springboard+.
Looking at the changing landscape in Ireland at the time, he decided to focus on a growing market and enrol on an IT course. He looked at the options and settled on Mainframe Development which was being run in association with General Motors by Letterkenny Institute of Technology. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was getting into at the time but the association with such a renowned company was enough to spark his interest.
While the course was very intensive, John enjoyed the work and got a placement in GM’s Limerick office where he was excited to be given an opportunity to put his new-found skills to the test, which gave him a huge boost in confidence and enthusiasm for his new career choice. On completion of the course John secured a full-time roll with the company and is still there today.
John also entered the IBM Mainframe Competition, securing 3rd place for UK & Ireland out of 300 participants.
It’s been a whirlwind for John. In the short time since he returned from Austrailia, he has transformed from a feeling of having no direction to securing employment in one of the world’s largest multinationals and he puts his success down to drive, determination, hard work and an opportunity from Springboard+.
