About this Course

Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education (CDCFE) is offering a one-year top-up degree program in Animation (BA Hons) accredited by the University of Wolverhampton (UK). There is a minimum of 12 hours of lectures per week, delivered over three evenings. Access and facilities outside of those hours are provided to students to carry out project work in a dedicated studio. The course is taught by industry professionals who are aware of industry skill gaps and who deliver workshops in the latest software. They also provide invaluable links to industry and promote best practice and professional standards. This degree has been running for 8 years and has gained an excellent reputation for upskilling graduates who have successfully gained employment in a fast-changing industry. The college works with 20+ companies regarding curriculum development and has ongoing in-depth engagement with studios such as Brown Bag Films, Boulder Media, Cartoon Saloon Lighthouse Studios, Treehouse Republic, Gingerbread Animation, Brown Bag Films, Cartoon Saloon, Sixteen South Studios, Pewter Games, Boulder Media, Kavaleer, Jam Media, Igloo Productions, Giant Animation. As quoted by John Rice MSC CEO/Executive Producer JAM Media “The BA Animation course at CDCFE has a competitive advantage because all modules are delivered by experienced tutors with extensive industry knowledge, preparing graduates for what is expected of them in industry.”
The animation sector has seen its annual production activity increased fourfold in the last 10 years, to €180 million in 2019 and with the extension of the S481 tax incentive for animation announced for 2022, further growth in the sector is expected. The animation industry has remained robust during the COVID 19 pandemic with an estimated workforce of over 2000. New companies continue to emerge nationally with Dublin, Belfast, Kilkenny, and Galway being industrial hubs. Further evidence of confidence can be seen with Irish animation studios like Jam Media partnering with Amazon, Cartoon Saloon teaming up with Apple and Boulder Media being acquired by Hasbro.

The college annually hosts a 5-day animation and media conference called Keyframe. The event attracts a variety of animation, VFX, gaming, film, TV and sound production professionals who give talks workshops and panel discussions, providing a unique insight into the sector. Keyframe participants can engage in discussions around curriculum and course development. Our Animation programme is oversubscribed every year. In September 2021 32 eligible applicants were interviewed and 20 accepted. We anticipate higher demand in September 2022. Critical to the growth of the animation industry is a supply of technically capable industry-ready graduates.

We attract students whose qualifications are inadequate to secure employment in Animation and those who need to retrain in up to date studio techniques and practices. Through industry contacts we know there is a demand for this course among employed industry professionals seeking to upskill, including qualified artists, illustrators, designers who wish to transfer to an animation career path. Our course Graduates have been successful gaining employment in various animation roles through collaboarative college networking events such as Keyframe and the Dingle Animation festival.
