About this Course

The Irish Medtech Springboard programme was developed specifically to enable unemployed scientists, engineers and technicians of traditional disciplines or equivalent to convert to the Life Sciences Sector. The Irish Medtech Association (previously IMDA) a business sector within Ibec, is continuously struggling to fill vacancies for quality, process, regulatory engineers and scientists, validation specialists, scientists, engineers and technicians. This programme will help engineers, scientists and technicians from traditional disciplines to cross into the new realms of engineering which are often hi-tech, hi-precision and highly regulated. The Irish Medtech Springboard accredited training is awarded by University of Limerick and Technological University Dublin & Ibec to impart the requisite skills.

The directed training will be delivered through blended learning (online and onsite classroom days)
10 classroom days 09:00 - 17:00, plus pre-recordings and tutorials.
2 exam days to finish.
GALWAY Venue for classroom, face to face in person, days to be confirmed.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to hold at the time of enrolment the established leaving certificate (or an approved equivalent) with at least Grade C3 in two higher level subjects and a Grade D3 in four ordinary or higher-level subjects (including Mathematics; Irish or another language and English).

In addition, the medical technology industry requirement is a minimum Level 7 degree or Level 6 Craft certificate. Mature students (at least 23 years of age on the 1st January 2022) may apply for entry to any of the programmes of study. Each mature student is considered on an individual basis.

Long Description

Developed in 2011 to enable up-skilling and re-skilling opportunities for engineers, scientists, technicians to achieve qualifications to work in the highly regulated Medtech sector. Quality and regulations qualifications are even more important to the sector with the new Medical Device Regulation (MDR) effective from May 2021 and in-vitro Diagnostic Device Regulation (IVDR) implementation imminent. The task of assembling a highly skilled workforce to support changes dictated by these new directives with little or no published guidance to achieve compliance is proving difficult. As a result, many products are being taken off the market and new product launches are happening in the US as opposed to Europe, eroding Irelands competitive advantage. The quality engineering module is internationally recognised as the preparation exam for the American Society of Quality (ASQ) Quality Engineer. The certificate in professional competence was specifically developed to give technical engineers the soft skills needed by engineering staff in industry.

The Irish Medtech Association (IMA) successfully ran this conversion programme through Springboard+ for 8 years. Over 460 engineers/scientists have been trained and 80%+ of unemployed gained employment on completion. In 2020, IMA crafted a survey to understand the impact of MDR/IVDR on the medtech Industry, where results highlighted 3 of its top areas of concern; 1) notified body capacity, 2) uncertainty regarding regulatory requirement interpretation, with the need for clear regulatory guidance 3) competition of resources/ availability (and/or lack) of expert Quality Assurance & Regulatory Affairs (QARA) professionals. This programme will directly help with upskilling of QARA professionals for these new roles.
