About this Course

Course Description:
This part-time, interdisciplinary course aims to develop specialist knowledge and relevant technical and soft skills for the medical devices sector. High value employment and growth in this sector is strong and sustainable with med tech roles featuring as ‘difficult to fill’ in multiple national and international surveys including the National Skills Bulletin 2021: https://www.solas.ie/f/70398/x/fcee571661/solas_nsb_report.pdf
Delivered by a blended learning model from September to May, the Diploma in Medical Device Science has been running successfully since 2009, and is continuously improved and updated to keep pace with this rapidly evolving sector. The course was developed to address skills gaps within the medical devices hub in the Galway region and surrounds, and nationally. There are also many medical technology organisations and associated supply chain businesses, including indigenous companies established to serve and drive innovation in the sector. The course is targeted at those within the med tech sector seeking focused up-skilling for career advancement and to drive the development of new products, processes and services in medical technology; and at those who require specialist re-skilling to facilitate career conversion into high-quality employment in this thriving and resilient market sector.
On completion of Diploma in Medical Device Science graduates will have demonstrated:
• An holistic understanding of the science and engineering behind various medical devices and highly marketable knowledge, competencies and skills relevant to the sector
• Specialised knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, and in particular of common disease states which can be monitored or improved through the use of medical devices
• Good knowledge of the chemistry and physics of various materials and an appreciation of which materials can be used to best effect in medical devices
• Specialised knowledge of biocompatibility of materials and devices and their immunological consequences in situ
• Technical skills and knowledge in the design and development of medical devices and the processes used in their production
• An appreciation of best practice, industry standards, policies and regulations within the medical devices sector
• An overview of the regulatory frameworks in the EU, the US and worldwide relevant to medical devices, pharmaceuticals and compound devices
• A range of critical transferable skills which will be beneficial for enterprise and their own career development, including analytical thinking, problem solving, critical thinking, communication skills and team work
The qualification is a minor award at Degree level, NFQ Level 8. Graduates can automatically progress to the associated B.Sc.in Science & Technology Studies with credit, in which case they will be exempt from one elective stream in the Degree.
Modules:
• Medical Device Science: Multi-disciplinary overview focusing on design and development of medical devices
• Biocompatibility & Device Design: Review and characteristics of biomaterials, classes of materials used in biomedical applications
• Mechanics of Solids: Study of engineering principles related to mechanical behaviour of solid bodies subjected to load
• Human Anatomy & Physiology: Structure and function of body system, studied on multiple levels
• Product and Process Development: Broad overview of methods and techniques used to develop new products.
• Regulatory Compliance: Overview appreciation of regulatory framework pertaining to pharmaceutical and medical device industries, and of regulations governing the development, manufacture and marketing of drugs and medical devices, inclusive of vitro diagnostic devices.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold the NUI Galway Diploma in Science & Technology Studies or a related science or engineering award of at least 90 ECTS at NFQ level 7. Relevant work experience and Recognition of Prior Learning may be considered for entry purposes.
