About this Course

This Special Purpose Award in the Science of Biotechnological Manufacturing Operations is a level 6 programme aimed at existing employees and at potential new recruits. It is designed to give the learner a fundamental understanding of chemical and biotechnological principles that underpin the Biopharmaceutical, Pharmaceutical and MedTech sector. This course aims to develop skills, knowledge and confidence to enable the learner to understand the purpose behind the manufacturing activities and allow the graduates to work in a manufacturing team with confidence.

Objectives

This award is to introduce the participants to basic concepts of chemistry such as structures, bonding and their relationship to chemical properties. The industrial biotechnology content includes environmental biotechnology, bio-pharmaceutical engineering, bioreactor design and bio-process design considerations.

Entry Requirements

Individuals under the age of 23 must have obtained at least 5 passes at Ordinary Grade D3 in the Leaving Certificate Examinations to include English and Mathematics. Alternative Mathematics does not qualify applicants on this basis.
Applications are welcome from mature students over 23 years of age by 1st January of year of entry. Leaving Certificate is desirable but not essential. Relevant work experience; skills gained through experiential learning; and other qualifications, will be considered when assessing applications.

Long Description

This Special Purpose Award in the Science of Biotechnological Manufacturing Operations is a level 6 programme aimed at existing employees and at potential new recruits. It is designed to give the learner a fundamental understanding of chemical and biotechnological principles that underpin the Biopharmaceutical, Pharmaceutical and MedTech sector. This course aims to develop skills, knowledge and confidence to enable the learner to understand the purpose behind the manufacturing activities and allow the graduates to work in a manufacturing team with confidence.

This one-year capacity building programme is focussed on providing the learner with fundamental knowledge and skills in science, specifically in the areas of Chemistry and Biotechnology. There is a strong laboratory focus associated with the programme that will develop the students' ability to analyse and critically evaluate scientific data in order to communicate experimental results in accordance with current technical report methodology used in industry. Integral elements of this one-year Springboard programme are the career professional development (CPD)and a two-day training course at the state-of-the-art National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT).

The programme also targets those who are looking to move their careers to the healthcare manufacturing sector by providing the underpinning science behind the industrial processes.

On completion of this programme, graduates can progress to the Higher Certificate in Science in GMP and Technology (level 6). This offers an attractive alternative to individuals who are apprehensive about taking their first tentative steps back into education and also, have other lifestyle demands. Students can undertake this short programme (two modules per year) and obtain an accredited qualification worthy of 10 credits. Those who can demonstrate significant levels of workplace learning, may be eligible to apply for direct entry to the BSc in GMP and Technology, a level 7 degree which is delivered in CIT in part time mode. More information available on http://www.cit.ie/course/CRSGMPE7Y1

Course contact hours will be by day and evening - 5 hours in semester 1 and 4 hours in semester 2.
There will be 2 days of practicals in NIBRT in January.

Why Choose This Course
