About this Course

This nationally accredited Special Purpose Award in the Science of Biotechnological Manufacturing Operations is a level 6 programme aimed at upskilling and reskilling learners to enhance their skill levels to transition to new work based opportunities. Engagement in this capacity building programme is designed to give the learner a fundamental understanding of chemical and biotechnological principles that underpin the Biopharmaceutical, Pharmaceutical and Medical Device sector. This course aims to develop skills, knowledge and confidence to enable the learner to understand the purpose behind the manufacturing activities and allow the graduates to work in a manufacturing team (pharma/biotech/medical device) with confidence.

Objectives

To provide an accredited qualification in basic chemical skills and biotechnology to develop core competencies in these areas.

Develop basic laboratory techniques in chemistry and biotechnology.

Allow students with relevant industrial experience to progress to the BSc (level 7) in GMP and Technology.

Entry Requirements

Individuals under the age of 23 must have obtained at least 5 passes at Ordinary Grade D3 in the Leaving Certificate Examinations to include English and Mathematics. Alternative Mathematics does not qualify applicants on this basis.
Applications are welcome from mature students over 23 years of age by 1st January of year of entry. Leaving Certificate is desirable but not essential. Relevant work experience; skills gained through experiential learning; and other qualifications, will be considered through our well-established RPL process when assessing applications.

Long Description

The programme also targets those who are looking to move their careers to the healthcare manufacturing sector by providing the underpinning science behind the industrial processes. It also caters for those students who are currently working within the manufacturing environment seeking to ring-fence their current knowledge with a qualification or who are wishing to upskill to technician levels.

This one-year part-time evening course starts in September by introducing the participants to basic concepts of chemistry such as structures, bonding and their relationship to chemical properties. Then in second semester the industrial biotechnology content commences which includes environmental biotechnology, biopharmaceutical engineering, bioreactor design and bioprocess design considerations. Modules offered allow leaners to acquire the necessary theoretical and practical skills in both the “how” and “why” aspects of the fundamentals of the Biotechnological Manufacturing Operations. There is a strong laboratory focus associated with the programme that will develop the students’ hands-on practical experience, ability to analyse and critically evaluate scientific data in order to communicate experimental results in accordance with current technical report methodology used in industry.

On completion of this programme, graduates who can demonstrate significant levels of workplace learning, may be eligible to apply for direct entry to the BSc in GMP and Technology, a level 7 degree which is delivered in CIT in part time mode.
