Long Description

This level 9 certificate programme offers a pathway to the Postgraduate Diploma and Master's Degree in Information Design and Development (http://cs.cit.ie/idd).

Information Developers are individuals who bridge the gap between subject matter experts and that of the end user. Under the banner of information development, the role may also be referred to as technical communicators, documentation specialist, information architects, editor, or go by another name. Regardless of the name, information developers perform a broad range of job functions across diverse industries.

The Society of Technical Communication (STC), define information developers as individuals that communicate using an instruction based focus on technical or specialized topics using technology. Their primary role is to communicate information to users of products or services in a clear concise manner for diverse audiences and stakeholder groups. In essence, information development and technical communications ensure that designs, products, systems and methodologies are documented and conveyed to their target audience to maximise its business value to the organisation.

The manner by which information developers perform their role has been impacted by technological advancements in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and modern day practitioners need skills from not just from Humanities but also Computing and Business domains. As a result, the programme is developed to provide students with the skills necessary for them to be leaders in designing, composing, managing and editing content using a standardised methodological approach using XML framework languages such as DITA. Using XML languages such as DITA, information will no longer be developed as monolithic documents but instead, a topic based approach will be used. On completion, students will be able to create standalone information solutions that can be easily reconfigured and reused to suit various audience stakeholders at a reduced cost of production.

The online programme is suitable for a wide variety of individuals - including students from a humanities background looking to move into the field of technical communications, individuals working as engineers or developers looking to move into the field of technical communications and individuals working as information developers looking to advance their career with an level 9 award in the area.

This programme offers is a direct response to articulated industry needs and its mode of intended delivery of part-time online access will not only increase participation in the programme but will also provide “second chance” and CPD education to adults who due to work or family commitments cannot attend full-time education on campus. To ensure that the programme offered is of the highest academic standard it has been designed and developed in line with best practice with due diligence to CITs academic quality procedures.

On completion of the Certificate in Information Design & Development, the students will have the necessary knowledge, skills and competence to perform the role of information developer in any organisation irrespective of the sector. As the Certificate in Information Design & Development forms part of an overall major award i.e. MSc in Information Design & Development, the students on completion of the Certificate will also have the opportunity to continue their studies advancing their knowledge in information experience, technological trends and document project management.
