About this Course

This postgraduate programme offers rewarding and challenging possibilities for learners interested in undertaking a conversion programme in the area of Software Development, and its application in an enterprise environment.


The aim of this programme is to provide non–computing graduates with an opportunity to develop the knowledge base, professional attitudes, and leadership and teamwork skills necessary to pursue a career as a software engineer. The course also aims to provide the student with the opportunity to engage in independent research in state of the art software engineering and technology.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the minimum entry requirement of a Level 8 degree, or equivalent, in a non-cognate area (i.e. a non-IT area). Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPL) will be granted based on relevant experience and training in accordance with LIT's RPL policy

Long Description

This programme is designed to address the ICT skills demand for Computer Software Engineers. Software has become an essential component of both modern business and society and as such provides limitless opportunities for graduates with software development skills and knowledge. This programme provides breadth of knowledge and depth of technical skills required to meet both the current and future needs of the IT industry. The programme focus is on Software Engineering and Software Development techniques, applying state of the art methodologies and technology. The breadth of the programme enhances the learners ability to fit rapidly into different workplace cultures, diverse computing environments and to adapt to change.

The pace of delivery and intensity of the programme demand strong commitment and dedication. Learners will engage in active learning, with an emphasis on practical work. The following modules will be covered:

Semester 1
Introduction to Programming, DBS Architecture, Design and Programming, Systems Modelling, Computer Systems/Operating Systems and Networks, Web Development

Semester 2
Application Development, Data Driven Applications Design and Implementation, Software Engineering, Algorithms and Data Structures, Software Development Project and Elective Subjects

Semester 3
Work Placement (3 months)

Timetable Info

1 Year, 3 days per week (timetabled) - 20 to 25 hours work per week, during day-time hours (i.e. between the hours of 9am & 6pm).

This is an intense programme and students should expect to be on campus for most of the week, Monday through Friday inclusive.

The programme will commence in September 2018.

Delivery Notes

All classes, Practical Lab sessions and tutorials will take place on campus at the LIT Moylish Campus in Limerick.
Classes will run from September 2018 to May 2019, with a Work Placement during the Summer Months of 2019.

Applications will be downloaded by the Flexible Learning Team at LIT and will be forwarded to the Academic Course Leader to be assessed. Once an application is assessed and a decision has been reached, the applicant will be informed of the decision via the portal. Successful applicants will be given a deadline for which they must accept the offer of a place on the programme.
