About this Course

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is fast becoming the global industry standard for designing, procuring, constructing and managing buildings and infrastructure projects. The digitisation of building component and performance data coupled with the use of collaborative tools and internationally agreed standards have been associated with reduced costs and improved
outcomes on projects worldwide.

This 10 credit Special Purpose Award is designed to act as a foundation for BIM adoption by those employed in the built environment related professions. Participants will be given the skills needed to create and engage with building information models and digital building data. The collaborative nature of the course will support the engagement of those operating in the fields of building design (architecture, civil and structural engineering, mechanical and electrical services, quantity surveying), building construction, related product manufacturing and facilities management.

The course will focus on the use of Autodesk Revit to generate model data and will take advantage of associated software packages and platforms to coordinate multiple disciplines in a Common Data Environment (CDE). Practical activities are supplemented by live and recorded lectures, allowing participants to grow their understanding of BIM practice.

The content of the course is offered entirely online, further supporting the participant's development in the use of collaborative tools. On completion, the successful candidate will be capable of generating BIM content and of participating in critical BIM processes using internationally agreed structures and procedures.

Entry Requirements

Level 6 qualification in construction studies or related discipline OR a minimum of 2 years’ experience in construction project-related work such as drawing production, measurement or similar activity (CAD experience would be beneficial but is not a prerequisite for this course). The Institute's policy in relation to non-standard applicants also applies.

Career Opportunities

The January 2015 Forfás labour force survey identified the construction sector as one experiencing significant labour growth but hampered by a specific skills deficit in the areas of:

• Use of ICT within the sector, particularly Building Information Modelling (BIM);

• Knowledge of the latest revisions to the Building Regulations, particularly in light of the new regulatory environment arising from the introduction of the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2014;

• Management skills in the area of quantity surveying.

This Special Purpose Award will provide training/up-skilling in sustainable construction through computer aided design in CAD 2D and 3D formats (including AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit software packages)t with a particular emphasis on information modeling and collaboration. The programme is aimed at practitioners with some existing design or construction skills who have been unable to address the skilts deficit arising from changes in both the ICT and regulatory environments (e.g. UK government requirement for minimum level 2 BIM compliance on all publically funded projects by 2016, changes to Irish public procurement procedures and significant changes to the Building Control Regulations introduced in 2014).

Skills areas which will be developed as part of this programme will include:

• Knowledge of construction, energy and building services technology associated with recent developments in building performance standards, renewable energy and regulatory requirements;

• The use ot modelting to test and compare building fabric and services scenarios for more efficient construction as well as performance in use;

• Use of CAD design and modelljng software in line with significant recent advances in the area for both design and project management (including costing) as welt as management in use.

Graduates of the proposed course would be targeting their experience to find work in roles such as the following:

• CAD/BIM Technician;
• Quantity Surveying Technician;
• Construction Supervisor;
• Buildings Officer/Manager;
• Property Surveying Technician.
