About this Course

The biopharmaceutical sector of the pharmaceutical industry has become an important producer of complex compounds/molecules known as 'biologics' used in the targeted treatment of important diseases. Ireland's pharmaceutical sector is now an important global centre for biopharmaceutics, attracting world leaders and major investment. Nine of the world’s top ten
pharmaceutical companies have substantial operations in Ireland. The sector employs in excess of 30,000 directly and as many more indirectly. It is attracting capital investment in the order of €1 billion per year currently.

The manufacture of biopharmaceutical products requires teams of skilled scientists and engineers and there is already an established shortage of graduates with biopharmaceutics experience to meet the growing demand.

This Certificate in Biopharmaceutical Processing is a blended programme, designed to provide the required training to graduates of laboratory science with majors in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or related disciplines. This will allow such graduates to supplement their core skills to meet the requirements of the biopharmaceutical sector.

The Biopharmaceutical Processing programme is delivered online and also on site at the Institute within the biological and pharmaceutical science laboratories and the pharmaceutical cell culture suite of Shannon Applied Biotechnology Centre, which is an Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateway.

Students will also receive on site training at the state-of-the-art bio-processing plant at the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research & Training (NIBRT) facility. NIBRT is highly regarded by companies and is a key resource for research and training for the Biopharma industry in Ireland. This will be a significant value add for the students in their career advancement. Graduates with this minor award will be well positioned to apply for roles with biopharmaceutical processing companies.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have completed a NFQ level 7 or NFQ level 8 laboratory chemical or life sciences with majors in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or related disciplines programme for entry to this programme. The Institute's policy in relation to non-standard applicants also applies.

Long Description

The modules to be completed as part of this programme will include:

Principles of Bioprocessing;
Cetl Culture Techniques;
GMP, Standards & Validation;
Upstream Bioprocessing;
Downstream Bioprocessing.

Why Choose This Course

What our students say:

"As an alumni of IT Tralee, I knew it was the right place for me to return to education. With an undergraduate degree in Pharmaceutical Analysis I decided to upskill and target a career in the Biopharmaceutical sector. This course has developed my skill set and given me an in-depth knowledge of the ever growing global Bioprocessing industry. Top class practical training was provided through the onsite cell culture facility at Shannon ABC, and through the in-house bioreactor facility. We also had the amazing opportunity of training in the world renowned NIBRT in Dublin. A much coveted experience. The blended learning aspect of the course enabled me to participate in lectures in the comfort of my home with fantastic lecturers on-hand to answer any questions. If you are like me and have a passion for STEM then IT Tralee is the place for you."

Career Opportunities

The Institute has designed a programme that best prepares science graduates with the necessary skills that the biopharmaceutical sector is looking for. The Institute's BSc (Honours) in Pharmaceutical Science with Biopharmaceutics was tailor made for the sector in terms of an undergraduate programma The minor award is constructed from the 5 most relevant modules from the BSc (Honours) programme and these have been packaged as the Minor Award being offered here.
Graduates of this minor award will build on their laboratory science practice competence and witl develop skill sets relating to those identified by the EGFSN (Future Skills Needs of the Biopharma Industry in Ireland August 2016) and most recently in its report (National Skills Bulletin 2016) in terms of pharmaceuticat, biopharma and food innovation. This includes the core areas of upstream and downstream processing, GMP, standards and regulation as well as cell culture, all of which have been identified as key skills.
Other reports clearly highlight the needs for graduates with the skills sets this proposed programme addresses. These include 'Molecules Make a Difference - Biopharmachem Ireland' and 'Growing the Irish Biolndustry - Irish Biolndustry Association'.
