These modules will also outline the skills needed for effective engagement in the workplace.

The ‘Personal Effectiveness and Employability’ programme has been assigned 10 credits and on completion of this module the learner will be able to develop an independent, self-managed, reflective approach to study and work. They will become familiar with workplace cultures and collaborate effectively in groups, teams and meetings.

Why Choose This Course

This course has been developed directly based on industry feedback, highlighting the need for Project Managers to have the skills and knowledge to plan, manage and implement BIM and Lean requirements in a project environment. The National BIM Council published the Roadmap to Digital Transition in December 2017 for Ireland’s Construction Industry reports that all Government funded capital projects by 2021 will be delivering with the use of BIM. The Roadmap to Digital Transition mission “is to work with industry organisations to promote the use of BIM and develop the appropriate technical skills amongst Irish construction firms so that they can successfully compete in markets where BIM is widely adopted or is a requirement”. As part of the Roadmap to Digital Transition report, details education and training as a fundamental pillar for the delivery of this mission.
The development of the Roadmap to Digital Transition report was based on summary of consultation, discussion and review through collaborative process of Clients, Contractor and Consultants to better understand how Ireland’s
construction sector can progress. The course developers are actively involved in CiTA North West BIM regional group that interacts with local Clients, Consultants and Contractors who provide feedback regarding skills gaps within the industry which formed part of the course development. Similarly, Lean Construction Ireland have been involved in the course development, reviewing module descriptors and providing feedback where skills are required within the industry based on members input. The course has been successfully delivered this academic year and has had strong interest from learners and industry overall. This course is the only online part time course which includes Lean Construction and also BIM, two key drivers for efficiency in the construction sector.
This course provides the learners with key skills, knowledge and understanding of the construction industry to develop as a manager or assistance manager and implement improvement that are required to deliver on the promises of increasing productivity and sustainability of the construction industry.

Career Opportunities

IT Sligo have been working closely with the Regional Skills Forum (RSF) since 2016 in addressing the skills
needs of industry. Data collected by the RSF is being used to support the development of new programmes and ensure the requirements of local and national employers are being met.
The Skills Audits completed by the RSF in the North West are being used to further inform applications to Springboard from IT Sligo. In addition, local, national and international reports influence the programmes proposed. IT Sligo have also engaged with data made available from bodies such as Intreo who provide valuable insight into information related to the unemployed. The programmes proposed take into consideration the needs of those seeking employment and those in employment.
From collaborating with local and regional employers, it was determined that employers are struggling to fill positions in the following areas:
• Construction Industry
• Design Consultants
• Local Authority
• Information Technologies (ICT)
• Process Engineering
The RSF Manager firmly believes that providing training in the above areas would contribute significantly to improving the employment prospects of a considerable number of people in the region. In addition to filling vacant positions, the above programmes would support employees wishing to progress in their career.
The programmes proposed reflect both the local and national requirements of employers in relation to training, education and recruitment.
