About this Course

Organisations have a legal responsibility to manage health and safety and to do this must delegate responsibility to managers, supervisors and operators to actively manage health and safety. This Special Purpose Award in Occupational Safety and Health (SPA OSH) is specifically designed for employers, employees or persons who require some knowledge in how to manage occupational safety and health risks. This course is accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the only Chartered body for health and safety practitioners and the world's largest health and safety professional membership organisation.

Objectives

This module is aimed at those who require some knowledge of occupational safety and health (OSH). It is especially important for those who have any responsibility for the general management of health and safety aspects associated with their work place or work activities or for providing general guidance to other employees on health and safety. The module aims to provide an overview of the main issues in OSH and the legislative context in which employers and employees must operate. An introduction into the concepts and basic principles that are necessary in order to appreciate why accidents occur and how hazards can be identified and their risks of exposure and harm to persons be controlled within the workplace.

Entry Requirements

Long Description

Organisations have a legal responsibility to manage health and safety and to do this must delegate responsibility to managers, supervisors and operators to actively manage health and safety. This Special Purpose Award in Occupational Safety and Health (SPA OSH) is specifically designed for employers, employees or persons who require some knowledge in how to manage occupational safety and health risks. For all IT Sligo Springboard programmes, the participants will be enrolled on a mandatory and accredited ‘Personal
Effectiveness and Employability’ programme that will be delivered by distance learning using an enquiry based and
interactive learning approach. This programme is designed to improve the employability skills of the students with
particular emphasis on CV and Interview preparation and on the job transferable skills to become an effective team
member. These modules will also outline the skills needed for effective engagement in the workplace.
The ‘Personal Effectiveness and Employability’ programme has been assigned 10 credits and on completion of this
module the learner will be able to develop an independent, self-managed, reflective approach to study and work. They will become familiar with workplace cultures and collaborate effectively in groups, teams and meetings.

Why Choose This Course

The Communications and Management Institute published an article in 2017 which stated ‘Ireland's economic
performance has been a significant factor in adding to the increase in health and safety jobs and careers. The demand for qualified Health & Safety professionals in Ireland has never been better and has increased by 30% since 2012, from 8 key industry sectors.
The total number of health & safety jobs in Ireland is estimated to be 16,867 and last year 2,053 jobs were advertised across a range of sectors from a low of 1,520 jobs in 2012. This excludes any jobs advertised by employers internally.
This figure is set to increase beyond 2018, when Ireland is expected to reach full employment.’

Career Opportunities

The Health & Safety job role is wide and varied and requires responsible, qualified and experienced persons. Typically, H&S officers/managers do the following: carry out risk assessments; consider how risks could be reduced ensure working practices are safe and comply with legislation; outline safe operational procedures which identify and take into account all relevant hazards; carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented;
prepare health and safety strategies and develop internal policy; lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks; keep records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements; record incidents and accidents and produce statistics for managers; keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of the legislation and any developments that affect the industry; This Special Purpose Award is the first step on the ladder to a rewarding career in Occupational Safety & Health.
