The Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management, delivered in conjunction with Velopi (a PMI Registered Education Provider), provides candidates with both internationally-recognised academic and professional training in project management. The modules equip participants with a broad perspective of project and programme management including technical, managerial and business dynamics.
The programme is supported by academic and expert-practitioners who deliver a curriculum that is relevant, current and research-informed. Using interactive seminar and workshop formats, participants engage in case studies, group and individual exercises in order to develop their decision-making and problem-solving skills. This ensures that project management is understood in its organisational context by emphasising strategic alignment and the management of resources.
Applications are invited from experienced managers and professionals with a NFQ Level 8 qualification in any discipline (Honours Degree or Higher Diploma) or an appropriate professional qualification AND at least 2 years significant professional experience/responsibility in a related field such as engineering, construction, software development and operations.
Candidates without an NQF Level 8 award are eligible to apply if he/she holds significant senior professional responsibility/experience in a related field such as engineering, construction, software development and operations.
Applications will also be considered from graduates with a NFQ level 8 qualification in any discipline who do not meet the professional experience requirement.
A Selection Committee may seek to interview applicants to determine if they meet the professional criterion.
English Language Requirement: All applicants whose first language is not English should have attained IELTS Level 6.5 or the equivalent TOEFL score with no individual section lower than 6.0.
Students will be exposed to cutting edge research, critical thinking and toolsets. This course is designed to provide candidates with a unique mix of technical and people focused project management knowledge, skills and abilities. The course provides learners with a balance of technical, managerial and interpersonal skills that maximises the impact of project managers.
Students will complete 30 credits as follows:
* Project Management (10 credits)
* Strategy, Leadership and Change (10 credits)
* Innovative Problem-solving and Decision-making (10 credits)
On successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management, students should be able to:
* Demonstrate advanced analytical and problem solving skills associated with effective project management practice.
* Apply practical tools, techniques and conceptual models in order to maximise the value of the project management process.
* Critically appraise how projects contribute to an organisation's ability to realise its strategic goals and business benefits.
This will help prepare students for a career in Project Management, a profession which according to PMI research is slated to grow by USD$6.61 trillion with 15.7 million new project management roles expected to be created between 2010 and 2020.
The EGFSN report on the ‘Future Skills Needs of the Biopharma Industry in Ireland’ (2016) highlighted project management as one of the key skills needed for the biologics manufacturing sector at NFQ levels 7-9. Project Management skills were also listed under the current and future skills needs for the engineering sector outlined in both the 2015 and 2016 EGFSN reports on ‘Guidance for Higher Education Providers on Current and Future Skills Needs of Enterprise.’ The EGFSN's 2016 National Skills Bulletin also cited above average projected medium-term growth for Project Manager roles.
This course will assist students in meeting these skills gaps as it will provide students with the opportunity to:
• Conceptualise a project in terms of its strategic goals, stakeholder's requirements, assumptions and constraints.
• Deploy industry best-practice techniques to define the scope, schedule, budget and overall management of the project.
• Evaluate progress against the plan and initiate corrective and preventative changes as appropriate.
• Appraise the project experience and quantifiably determine the success or otherwise of the project.
• Apply practical tools, techniques and conceptual models in order to maximise the value of the project management process.
• Critically appraise how projects contribute to an organisation’s ability to realise its strategic goals and business benefits.
To ensure that the programme’s participants are kept abreast of real industry practice, the teaching team includes highly experienced senior practitioners who have over 20 years global industry experience each.These expert practitioners deliver a curriculum that is relevant, current and research-informed.
A dedicated UCC EMPLOYABILITY AND WORK PLACEMENT COACH will work with students on this programme and provide a tiered approach to supporting the participants with the development of their job readiness and their transition into employment. The activities of the Coach will be structured to meet the differing needs of the 3 categories of eligible applicants for the 2019 Springboard+ call: those unemployed / previously self-employed; returners; and those in employment in designated sectors. Main activities will include:
1. ONE-TO-ONE CAREER COACHING to formulate Individual CAREER ACTION PLANS leading to employment: Individual career coaching will be provided for each participant to reflect on:
* Where they are now in their careers;
* Where they want to be;
* Strategies for gaining employment on completion of their Springboard+ course.
These individual coaching sessions will be customised to the needs of the student within the three categories of Springboard+ 2019 applicants.
2. JOB READINESS WORKSHOPS to complement individual coaching sessions will be built into the programme as outlined below:
* Positioning oneself for job readiness (4 workshops): Setting realistic career objectives; Understanding strengths and skills; Learning from successful role models; Developing a career management strategy.
* Moving forward into a job (4 workshops): Taking action by developing career goals and implementing them;
* Creative job-hunting both on-line and off-line; Written applications, CVs and interview preparation and Implementing career plans.
* Small Group Workplace skills training will also be delivered to help individuals with barriers to employment to gain confidence, develop the people skills and the insights needed to transition to the world of work.
3. Participants will be given the opportunity to MEET EMPLOYERS by
* Attending UCC organised recruitment fairs, jobs roadshows and other events where employers will be invited on campus to meet students;
*Attending employer-led events on building workplace competencies.
*Meet with employers for informational interviews.
Classes are scheduled to run for a full day every second Friday and usually a half day Saturday from September to June (full timetable provided in advance). Online seminars and activities are also utilised.
RPL may be used by Springboard participants applying to this course to gain admission to the programme where an applicant many not otherwise reach the standard educational qualification entry requirements.

Fee applicable for those currently in employment - €450. This fee will be collected by UCC prior to the commencement of the course.
