About this Course

This postgraduate certificate in Bioanalytical Techniques has been designed in conjunction with the Biopharmaceutical industry to prepare candidates for roles in biopharmaceutical quality control (QC), utilising current bioanalytical techniques. This course is particularly suited to those with an interest in the QC area of Biopharma manufacturing. The course covers the requisite knowledge, skills and professional competence required to be part of the skilled workforce required for the rapidly expanding Biopharma sector. As part of the course students will gain hands-on experience in the NIBRT/Waters Corporation Bioanalytical lab which has been specifically designed to provide comprehensive, hands-on practical experience in a cGMP biopharmaceutical quality control laboratory.
The primary focus of this programme is the biopharmaceutical industry sector in Ireland. This course is particularly suited to provide the core skills to transition those individuals with some previous experience as operators or laboratory technicians to similar roles within the rapidly-expanding Biopharmaceutical manufacturing sector and also to more specialised roles. The course is structured to include the requisite knowledge, skills and professional competence required to be part of this workforce and has a large practical component

Objectives

What subjects will I study?

Bioanalytical Techniques Theory Module
Topics covered include: Testing strategy for drug substance characterization, routine release testing and stability testing; Protein assays; Slab-gel and Capillary electrophoresis; Immunoassays; Liquid chromatography (including high performance liquid chromatography, ion chromatography and ultra-performance liquid chromatography); Mass spectrometry, Qualitative and quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction and other nucleic acid technologies.

Bioanalytical Practical Module
Students will complete a practical placement in Waters Corporation/NIBRTs Complete Product and Processing Characterization Facility that has been established to carry-out "fit-for-purpose" biopharmaceutical analysis, including protein and peptide characterization. Students will cover UPLC (HPLC), Mass Spec, protein estimation, Capillary electrophoresis, western blotting, ELISA etc.

Effectiveness & Employability
NIBRT/IT Sligo Springboard students will take part in an accredited a structured job readiness programme called ‘Get Working’. This is delivered by distance learning and a particular emphasis is placed on CV and interview preparation.
“Get Working” is hosted by HR specialists from ‘Worklink’. This programme consists of topics including, ‘Strategies for job readiness’, ‘What I have to offer’, ‘Identifying the right role & target employers’ as well as ‘Preparing for interviews’.
Upon completion the learner will be able to develop an independent, self-managed, reflective approach to study and work. They will become familiar with workplace cultures and collaborate effectively in groups, teams and meetings.

Entry Requirements

This programme is open to students who have obtained an honours degree (L8) or equivalent in an appropriate discipline (Engineering or Life Sciences). Other candidates, with alternative honours degrees and relevant experience in the biopharmaceutical industry may apply for consideration through the RPL process.
