About this Course

The Entrepreneurs Programme leading to an Advanced Certificate in Management Practice in conjunction with Ulster University has been specifically designed for individuals at the very early stage of forming a business.

Including modules in “The Future of Work”, “Presenting Your Best Self”, “Refining Your Business Idea” & “Developing Your Online Presence”, the programme will assist budding entrepreneurs as you develop from a seedling idea to a fully functioning business, ensuring you have a well thought out and actionable business plan and are equipped with practical and usable skills to enable you to grow your business.

The programme will take place one day a week over 18 weeks in classroom-based lectures in The Irish Times Building in Dublin City Centre.

To date, over 200 budding entrepreneurs have chosen our programme and we consistently receive excellent feedback;

“I feel now that I am better equipped and I have a “toolkit” to enable me to plan better and set my goals.” [Eimear Kelly - Darcy the Dingo]

“The assignments challenged me to interrogate my business idea, refine my thinking and to embrace the fact that this is a journey with lots of learning along the way!” [Margaret Clapham – Sales Growth]

“I really struggled with the isolation of working alone all the time and I found it difficult some days to motivate myself. Knowing that every Wednesday I would be going into the Irish Times Training offices to meet the same great group of people really motivated me and I found that I was hungry for information as each week passed. The standard of training from the lecturers was really quite exceptional and I took a lot of motivation from that too.” [Anne Gallagher – The Beauty Kit]

“Superb advice on starting and running your own business and professional development planning. It doesn't matter where you are starting from, or what your background is, the entrepreneurial approach taken on this course will introduce you to a world of possibilities.”

Long Description

There are 11 module subjects as well as course work of three 1,500 word assignments (one of which will be a Business Plan).

This first welcome day will include an overview of the programme and the learning outcomes as well as an induction to Ulster University and their range of online supports including the digital library which all students will have access to. The afternoon will consist of a session on networking skills.

This module is tailored specifically to help you present yourself and your idea in the best way possible, by identifying your strengths as well as potential areas for self-improvement. Day 1 will focus on effective communications and speaking to your audience while Day 2 will include workshops on portfolio/CV preparation, preparing your LinkedIn Profile and creating a 2 minute elevator pitch in addition to one-to-one coaching sessions on pitching for funding and presenting your sales pitch.

This module focuses on the individual, your perceived strengths, weaknesses and areas for development. Self-discovery through the use of competency frameworks, a series of self-analysis questionnaires and psychometrics, will provide you with useful insights that will form the basis of your Personal Development Plan (PDP). The PDP will then be utilised throughout the duration of the programme. The self-analysis undertaken in this module centres around the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® instrument offering a powerful set of tools for lifelong growth and development.

This module is designed to help you turn your idea into a fully functional business. Strategic development looks at the overall purpose and direction of your business, taking into account the decisions needed which reflect the future, scope and competitive position of your business. The programme emphasises the need for a holistic perspective of the strategic issues to ensure longevity and sustainability of your business.

The module will explore what channels you can use to reach customers and how a funnel can be built and optimised from raising awareness of a product or service to developing viable leads and converting those leads into sales. You will develop an individual marketing draft strategy to grow your profile and revenues with a measurable cost of customer acquisition.

Just like off-line stores, each successful eCommerce (online) brand has its own unique character and characteristics based on a compelling consumer proposition. Which kind of e-commerce business are you going to be? This module will provide examples and reviews of successful eCommerce brands, how they’ve taken advantage of the internet to grow their online sales through consumer engagement, value proposition, business model (e.g. subscription for repeat purchase, pricing etc.). You will also learn how to manage consumer relationships and transactions online to enhance consumer experience, drive satisfaction and encourage consumer loyalty.

The nature of work has been changing as economies in the western world move from manufacturing to the provision of services and knowledge-based economies. The future is unknown but there are trends emerging both in the workplace and in individual priorities. In this module, you will identify significant changes in the nature of work and explore relationships among the changes, evaluating the impact of these changes on individual workers and small businesses.

You will identify the global macro-environmental trends behind these changes, review the significant changes that result from simplification and standardisation of procedures; contracting out and outsourcing; employment of part-time, temporary and volunteer workers; multi-skilling and job combination. You will then apply these strategies to your own individual business.

This module will deepen your appreciation of time as a resource to be proactively managed and leveraged in order to achieve personal and business objectives more efficiently and effectively. You will identify ways to create and save time, identify your time management strengths and weaknesses and clarify ways in which you can save and create time, reduce or eliminate low-return tasks. You will also learn how to set achievable, measurable targets and develop an action plan for improvement.

Convincing prospective customers, investors and partners is the key task for every business, irrespective of whether the focus is business to consumer (B2C) or business to business (B2B). This module will help you rethink your approach to selling and pitching, and help to close sales and deals.

You will learn how to profile your customers, identify their needs and build an impactful case for why they should purchase or partner with you. You will also explore the psychological power of persuasion and learn how to use proven tools and techniques to achieve results.

This module outlines the financial and accounting fundamentals on which a business depends. It will help to put your business on the firmest financial footing possible and will cover topics including; Accounting Principles and Financial Reporting, basic Book-Keeping, Profit and Loss Account, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statements.

How do you ensure that you attract your target customers to your website? This module will explore techniques you can use to drive quality traffic to your website (Social Media Marketing, SEO, Online Search, Display & Affiliate Advertising, Email Marketing etc.) and how to use Deals Management to its best advantage (Groupon, Living Social etc.). There will be a focus on customer segmentation, personalisation & measurement throughout. Finally, you will learn how to prepare a marketing campaign for your business which focuses on managing your budget effectively, analysing results and maximising your ROI. Topics include; (SEO, email marketing, social media, online advertising, analytics and preparing a digital marketing plan).

In this module, you will learn how to design and build a model for growth and plot what you are going to do and when including various options for building a growth strategy; increasing market share, joint ventures and other factors affecting business growth.

This module will enable you to develop the project management and investigative skills required to describe a new business project, analyse it and make recommendations for improvement. During this module, you will specifically work on your own Business Model Canvas & Business Plan.
