About this Course

This SPA in Process Safety provides an online accredited Level 7 qualification in Process Safety over 1 year for individuals who need to safely handle, store and use potentially hazardous materials and processes.
This programme targets employment roles in production/manufacturing, commissioning and operation roles within
pharmaceutical/biotechnology/food & drink manufacturing companies.

This Special Purpose Award in Process Safety was developed in response to requests by industrial participants in the South Western Skills Forum in February 2020.

The following Skills Needs/Upskilling Needs by Occupational Role were identified by the industrial participants; Process Safety Engineer, Process Engineering, Resource & Upskilling, Production & EHS Managers, Craft, Chemists, Automation.

This programme is in response to this request. It has been developed in conjunction with Institute of Technology Tralee and University College Cork.

This programme addresses the key challenge identified over the next decade to ensure an adequate supply of qualified individuals with consistent learnings aligned with industrial needs across the institutions based in the South West (CIT, UCC and Tralee IT).

Students will attain knowledge and understanding of the theory and application of Process safety. This involves online delivery of the main theoretical elements of the programme combined with Industry delivered seminars and workshops. The first module is designed to give students a theoretical grounding in the issues that must be addressed when assessing the hazards arising from the process industries. The second module addresses Process Safety in practice.

Entry Requirements

All qualified candidates are required to have a minimum of a Level 6 in an engineering or science discipline. Equivalent recognition may be given through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis to candidates who have not yet achieved this academic standard but who can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience.
