About this Course

The aim of this programme is to provide students with the skills to play key roles in quality management and quality engineering within the medical device sector. Learners will cover key areas such as Regulatory affairs, Quality Management and Operational Excellence. Other key areas covered include Experimental Design & Statistics and Design Quality Assurance. Forfas published a report in April 2013 Future skills requirements of the manufacturing sector to 2020, and this highlighted a critical shortage of skills in Quality Engineering. The Future skills needs analysis report for the medical technology section in Ireland to 2020, issued in 2017 by the Irish Medtech Association identifies the potential to create an additional 4,000 jobs by 2020. GMIT have collaborated with the local Medical Device sector to develop this programme which will deliver key skills within the Quality Engineering field. This programme has the support of a large number of indigenous and multinational-based Medical Device companies, and will be delivered in a flexible fashion in order to facilitate those working in the sector to also complete the programme. The programme seeks to (a) Provide students with a broad, integrated approach to quality management, facilitating their progression in a quality role in industry or services; (b) Provide students with the ability to develop and implement various quality systems which would lead to an accredited quality award; (c) Provide the leadership and communication skills required to work at senior level in the area of quality and to effect change; (d) Facilitate the students in developing expertise in various quality tools that cover the life cycle of various products and services.

This Certificate was previously known as "Quality for the Medical Device Sector" when it was delivered in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
