The Irish Animation Sector has been a creative foundation of Irelands vibrant audiovisual industry and continues to grow and thrive. Dynamic and technically advanced, Irish animation studios are making award-winning features, shorts, apps and games. Irish animation has been nominated for every major international award.

Animators work in many areas across many creative disciplines including, 2D and 3D animation, Stop frame, Computer-generated animation for Film and TV, Motion graphics and the Games industry.

This Level 6 Animation Certificate Programme will introduce participants to valuable professional workflows and teach a range of skills; from theory, preproduction, production, and postproduction in 2D and 3D animation and modelling.

For new entrants, returners, job seekers or employed people who wish to diversify or forge a new career in a varied range of areas within the animation industry, this programme is designed to the develop skills, knowledge and competence to meet the growing and changing needs of the industry. Some of the up-skilling or re-skilling transferrable skills or qualifications include Creative Media, Animation, Art and Design, Computer Aided Technologies, Design for Moving Images, Film & Video, Graphic Design/Illustration, Multimedia, Spatial Design, 3D Design, Game Development etc.

Animation employers seek employees who possess the latest animation techniques and technology skills, led by entrepreneurial capability. A key element of this recognised qualification involves producing a professional portfolio of work and developing entrepreneurship skills. Using industry led design and delivery, this innovative programme aims to develop specific knowledge, skills and competence for animation industry professionals capable of working in several roles in the sector.

Combining hands-on experience, industry projects and professional guidance ensures participants are taught beyond the standard levels in this unique programme. Our onsite business incubation unit and staff encourages the development of collaboration and linkages by supporting the progress and growth of participants and graduates.

Objectives

-Demonstrate an understanding of the animation pipeline and its central role in animation production, confidently referring to the work of key practitioners, communicating a developed knowledge of animation concepts and vocabulary

-Confidently create and manipulate 2D and 3D art and using animation principles to create concepts and animatic in the work environment

-Demonstrate ability in the manipulation of animation production software through the regular use of industry standard tools, presenting original art and animations

-Competently apply the requisite knowledge, concepts and tools of enquiry at the forefront of animation pre-production and production

-Demonstrate reflective thinking when it comes to producing animations, both with and without the use of animation technology

-Pursue academic progression from the Certificate to further study in animation production and/or related animation industry areas

Entry Requirements

1. Those in receipt of an eligible payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection and the formerly self-employed.

2. People not in receipt of a payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection that have been out of the work environment for a number of years due to childcare or other caring obligations and have a previous history of employment but may require upskilling or reskilling to transition back to the workforce (“Returners”).

3. People in employment who wish to upskill or reskill to meet a specific emerging skills gap.

Returners and employed participants will be required to meet the residency requirements for Springboard+; that they must have been ordinarily resident in an EU/EEA/Swiss state for at least three of the five years preceding their entry to their course.

Applicants to the Certificate programme must have obtained a minimum of two Leaving Certificate H5 grades or higher and four O6 / H7 grades, including maths and either Irish or English for entry to the programme. Mature learners over the age of 23 can also apply for entry on to the programme.

All applicants are met in advance of admission by the Programme Director in order to provide them with detailed information on the programme and the nature of the workload and challenges involved. This allows applicants to make informed decisions as to the suitability of the programme for their needs and aspirations.

Minimum Requirements for General Learning:

Candidates presenting with the Leaving Certificate should have obtained a minimum of two H5 grades or higher and four O5/H6 grades including maths and either Irish or English for entry to the programme.
Minimum Experiential Requirements (if applicable):

There are no specific experiential requirements for entry to the programme. Applicants presenting without the required level 5 qualification but with a lower level qualification combined with experiential learning will be assessed as per QA C3 the policy on Recognition of Prior Learning.

Programme-specific RPL criteria and arrangements for Entry, Exemptions from Modules, advanced Entry and Direct Access to the Award:

Recognition of prior experiential learning is supported by the College. Such applications arise when a candidate does not have a level 5 award or equivalent. In such cases the candidate can ask that experiential learning be assessed in relation to the entry criteria.

Minimum Language Proficiency Requirements:

All learners are required to be proficient in English. Where a candidate’s mother tongue is not English, he or she is required to provide a proof of proficiency in the English language through satisfactory performance on an internationally recognised test (e.g. IELTS 6.5) or other similar English Language qualifications. Where applicants are borderline or do not have a recognised English Language qualification, they are tested in the College’s English Language Centre on arrival and, subject to satisfactory performance, can be offered admission or be required to undertake English language classes until they have achieved a satisfactory competence in the language.

Minimum Mathematical Proficiency Requirements:

Applicants should have achieved at least a O6 /H7 at Ordinary Level Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate with the exception of mature students and those entering via RPL.

Pre-Admission Interview:

It is College policy to meet with candidates following their application to ensure that the programme is an appropriate match for the needs, capabilities and aspirations. The interview is not graded for admissions purposes, but rather serves to provide assurances for the learner and the College that the programme is an appropriate fit for their needs.

All applicants are required to present for interview, and are expected to demonstrate the following: A proven interest in animation and animation production, computer literacy, an interest in 3D Sculpting and 2D Art, inherent creativity and a willingness to explore new ideas, a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the field of study, scholarly dedication to academic aspects of the programme and self-organisation skills.

The entry criteria are used to ensure that all applicants who are accepted onto the programme have the basic educational requirements to assure they can succeed and serve as a protection for learners. The purpose of the Interview is twofold: it serves to emphasise to the applicant the challenge that the programme will present and to assure the Programme Director that the applicant has the ability to succeed on the programme.

Delivery Notes

Blended

All classes will be delivered in a blended mode with each semester lasting 12 weeks. Students will only be on campus every second week with theory classes delivered solely online. The 12 weeks of a full semester will run concurrently but will alternate between online and in lab classes. Social Distancing will also be observed.
