About this Course

This 1 Year Top-up Level 7 BA Programme in Animation is appropriate for those with previous skills and/or experience in Animation, Graphics, Art and Design or related discipline who wish to develop into the production stage of the animation pipeline.

Animation employers seek employees possessing the latest technology skills, led by entrepreneurial capability. Technical skills must be blended with Entrepreneurial and Business skills combined with an excellent portfolio that showcases individual creativity.

Focusing on studio training and practical work, graduates will be industry-ready with a demonstrable portfolio of work. The Programme is structured to support the learner in realising and creating their own original work through project development and incubation.

Participants will engage in the latest technologies in animation post-production, engaging in practical learning outcomes to demonstrate their own original work and create short animations to a professional standard. Learners will be supported in entrepreneurship and business development. This combination of creative and technical skills will produce versatile learners capable of fulfilling multiple roles within the animation industry.

Through a focus on studio training and practical work, emphasis is placed on industry led teaching and consultation, ensuring this degree is targeted towards direct employment.

Aimed at new entrants, returners, job seekers or employed people who wish to diversify or forge a new career in a varied range of areas within the animation industry, this programme is designed to the develop skills, knowledge and competence to meet the growing and changing needs of the industry.

Roles in the animation sector include concept artists, videogame developers, rigging experts, compositing specialists, storyboard artists, sequential art publishers.

Some of the up-skilling or re-skilling transferrable skills or qualifications include Creative Media, Animation, Art and Design, Computer Aided Technologies, Design for Moving Images, Film & Video, Graphic Design/Illustration, Multimedia, Spatial Design, 3D Design, Game Development.

Objectives

-Demonstrate an understanding of the animation pipeline and its central role in animation production, confidently referring to the work of key practitioners, communicating a developed knowledge of animation concepts and vocabulary

-Confidently create and manipulate 2D and 3D art and using animation principles to create concepts and animatic in the work environment

-Demonstrate ability in the manipulation of animation production software through the regular use of industry standard tools, presenting original art and animations

-Competently apply the requisite knowledge, concepts and tools of enquiry at the forefront of animation pre-production and production

-Demonstrate reflective thinking when it comes to producing animations, both with and without the use of animation technology

-Develop a major project which is unique and patentable under the student's own efforts.

Entry Requirements

1. Those in receipt of an eligible payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection and the formerly self-employed.

2. People not in receipt of a payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection that have been out of the work environment for a number of years due to childcare or other caring obligations and have a previous history of employment but may require upskilling or reskilling to transition back to the workforce (Returners).

3. People in employment who wish to upskill or reskill to meet a specific emerging skills gap.

Returners and employed participants will be required to meet the residency requirements for Springboard+; that they must have been ordinarily resident in an EU/EEA/Swiss state for at least three of the five years preceding their entry to their course.

Applicants to the Certificate programme must have obtained a minimum of two Leaving Certificate H5 grades or higher and four O6 / H7 grades, including maths and either Irish or English for entry to the programme. Mature learners over the age of 23 can also apply for entry on to the programme.

All applicants are met in advance of admission by the Programme Director in order to provide them with detailed information on the programme and the nature of the workload and challenges involved. This allows applicants to make informed decisions as to the suitability of the programme for their needs and aspirations
Minimum Requirements for General Learning

Applicants to the BA in Animation programme must meet normal QQI requirements.

The minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirement for all higher certificates (Level 6) and ab initio bachelor degrees (Level 7) programmes is Grade O6/H7 or better in five Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish.

Programme-specific RPL criteria and arrangements for Entry, Exemptions from Modules, advanced Entry and Direct Access to the Award:

Recognition of prior experiential learning is supported by the College. Such applications arise when a candidate does not have a level 5 award or equivalent. In such cases the candidate can ask that experiential learning be assessed in relation to the entry criteria.

It would be beneficial for students to have previously studied art or design communication; however, all students will be subject to a suitability interview to assure suitable candidacy on the programme.

Students who complete a level 6 Certificate in Art & Design Foundation Studies which offers a fundamental learning insight into creative media and design will be eligible to progress to the BA in Animation programme.

Mature learners over the age of 23 can also apply for entry on to the programme.

All applicants will present for interview, and will be expected to demonstrate the following: a proven interest in animation and animation production, computer literacy, an interest in 3D Sculpting and 2D Art, inherent creativity and a willingness to explore new ideas, a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the field of study, scholarly dedication to academic aspects of the programme and self-organisation skills.

Candidates who lack a portfolio at the interview stage will be given the opportunity of completing a creative assignment in the field of animation or art which can will be reviewed by a senior member of the Faculty or to participate in an introductory series of classes in animation hosted by Pulse College to assess their potential suitability.

The applicant will need to show how the prior learning evidences the achievement of the learning outcomes for the module or stage for which RPL is being sought.

Minimum Language Proficiency Requirements

All learners are required to be proficient in English. Where a candidate’s mother tongue is not English, he or she is required to provide a proof of proficiency in the English language through satisfactory performance on an internationally recognised test (e.g. IELTS 6.5) or other similar English Language qualifications. Where applicants are borderline or do not have a recognised English Language qualification, they are tested in Griffith College’s English Language Centre on arrival, and subject to satisfactory performance can be offered admission or be required to undertake English language classes until they have achieved a satisfactory competence in the language.

Minimum Mathematical Proficiency Requirements
Applicants must have a minimum of a Grade O6/H7 in Leaving Certificate Maths, with the exception of mature students and those entering via RPL.

Semester 2 (12 Weeks):
Individual one on one supervision with practicing industry professional to develop a new an original project set to industry standard.

Delivery Notes

Blended

All classes will be delivered in a blended mode with each semester lasting 12 weeks. Students will only be on campus every second week with theory classes delivered solely online. The 12 weeks of a full semester will run concurrently but will alternate between online and in lab classes. Social Distancing will also be observed.

Applicants will have to undergo an interview process via Zoom.
They must have relevant industry or academic experience.
Familiarity with Maya is essential and the applicant must hold a Level 6 Award in Animation or applicable field.
