About this Course

The Postgraduate Certificate in Data Science is a one-year part time programme which aims to provide science, engineering and computing graduates an opportunity to upskill in the developing area of data science and machine learning.

This is a postgraduate programme at level 9 in the National Framework of Qualifications. Applicants are required to have strong programming skills. The programme covers the key skills needed for an entry level position in data science, including modules in data wrangling, data mining, data visualisation, probability and statistical inference and machine learning. It is very practically focussed with students developing skills in the main tools, methods and techniques used in the domain.

It is a part time programme with evening delivery, over three evenings in the first semester and two evenings in the second semester.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the Postgraduate Certificate in Data Science are to:
• Impart an awareness of the principles and knowledge of data science to students who have a solid academic background in computer science or other related discipline.
• Equip students with knowledge of technical skills, tools and techniques of data science.
• Expose students to leading-edge skills, tools, methodologies and technologies needed for an entry level position in data science within industry.

Entry Requirements

2.1 classification level 8 degree in a numerate discipline (including engineering, computing, science) or a 2.2 classification level 8 degree with at least 2 years of relevant industry experience. All applicants require to have demonstrated strong programming skills.

Long Description

The programme includes the following modules:

Working with Data: This module focuses on developing the key data specific skills necessary for the successful development and implementation of an analytics project. The module covers the key skills needed to manage, create, process and extract data . It develops skills in general data wrangling including data cleansing, pre-processing, conversion, parsing and data fusion and integration - tasks required to handle data from a variety of sources.

Probability & Statistical Inference: The module aims to introduce the student to probability theory and basic methods of statistical inference, why they are needed and how they are used in constructing dataset analysis. The aim is achieved through a mixture of theory and practice.

Data Mining: This module addresses the application of data mining techniques to real business problems. The focus of the module is on the use of data mining techniques effectively in organisations. As part of the module students will develop a complete data analytics solution within a team.

Machine Learning: The aim of this module is to provide students with a comprehensive foundation and practical skills in machine learning including the underlying principles, the techniques used and applications of machine learning. Students will be required to use the techniques presented and to design and develop a machine learning system

Data Visualisation: This module provides students with an introduction to the theories underpinning data visualisation, best practice in using visualisations effectively, and practical skills in creating visualisations from datasets. It provides a practical introduction to the tools and techniques of data visualisation. Through practical instruction, labs and tutorials, students will be equipped to successfully implement data visualisation techniques.
