About this Course

The Post Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Engineering meets the needs of industrial sectors that are of strategic importance for Ireland including Medical Devices, Pharmaceutical, Healthcare, Food Production & Technology.

This one year (9 hours per week) Post-Graduate Certificate (PG CERT) programme aims to produce graduates with strong technical skills and applied problem solving for the Biomedical Engineering sector in the South East region and nationally. The programme addresses the changing skills needs of manufacture and R&D in the high value biomedical sectors of Ireland including medical devices, pharmaceutical and life sciences, while offering the student the skillset for new product development and strategic technological awareness. The student will attain an academic mastery in the field of biomedical engineering, while still having a broad knowledge of other relevant fields and how these converge.

The programme has been designed under guidance from some of the leading industrial professionals in Ireland and abroad. The modules for this course come from the award winning M.Sc. in Innovative Technology Engineering, which has been described by the Applied Innovation Centre of Enterprise Ireland as being one of the most relevant and innovative moves in recent years in the Irish university sector. As a testament to this, over 98% of all graduates (from the broad masters programme) are already in full-time employment, with the majority being in the medical devices sector. The programme is further designed to fulfil current and future skills needs of the resurgent manufacturing sector in Ireland, and matches key growth sectors identified by the Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation as detailed in the South East Economic Development Strategy (2013-2023), specifically in relation to Health, Life Sciences and Medical Devices, ˜Bio-Technology and the Green Economy, and Agri-Business, Food Production and Technology.

Entry Requirements

The normal minimum expected entry requirement for the PG Certificate in Biomedical Engineering will be a cognate accredited NFQ Level 8 Honours 2.2. Engineering or Science Degree. As detailed below, entry to the programmes may also be facilitated via the Institutes Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis.
