Leadership Excellence Through Creativity and Innovation

To successfully navigate current disruptive challenges such as Covid-19, Brexit, digitisation and climate change, today's managers require the mindset and skill-set to adapt to change, seize opportunity and lead innovation in their business in order to stay competitive and resilient.

The UCD Professional Diploma in Creativity, Innovation and Leadership is an action-oriented, virtual learning experience that will contribute to a mindset change. It will equip current and prospective middle to senior managers and those returning to employment with the leadership skills to drive innovation within SMEs and large businesses in all industries and sectors. Participants will gain the practical tools to develop and execute ideas of value within an organisation - 'intrapreneurship'. Throughout the final module (Action Learning Project - Professional Practice) participants will apply their new intrapreneurial skills to a project within an organisation and practise inspiring others to innovate in a collaborative way.

This course is designed to equip participants with the skills that will help them to become a recognised champion for innovation within an SME or large business. It is expected that all participants will make progress in their career.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree (NFQ Level 8 or equivalent) or equivalent professional qualification. Consideration will be given on a case by case basis to applicants who do not hold a primary degree but who can demonstrate extensive professional experience. Typically, such applicants would have five years or more experience where their role includes managing teams, leading projects, programmes or business units.

If you do not have the required documentation (e.g. academic transcripts) to hand, you may still begin an application to this course and upload these documents at a later point.

1. Applicants must satisfy Springboard's requirements to be eligible for funding

2. Applicants must satisfy UCD's requirements for entry to this postgraduate, level 9 course.
This means you must upload original, official transcripts or your degree parchment that demonstrate that you have a minimum of an honours degree, in any discipline (NFQ level 8 or equivalent) and you must upload an up-to-date CV.

In the absence of a degree, 5+ years of relevant work experience may be considered under UCD's Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy. Such applicants must submit their CV and any transcripts, certificates etc.

If you are applying under RPL, please review your CV to ensure that it includes the following:-
I. Experience of leadership and self-direction
II. Experience of management or entrepreneurship
III. A description of eg. employee, budget and client responsibilities

Curriculum and Learning
The UCD Professional Diploma in Creativity, Innovation and Leadership has been developed in collaboration with industry and leverages the significant experience of UCD Innovation Academy. It is designed in response to the current challenges and perceived future threats to the competitiveness of SMEs and large business.

What will I Learn?
Participants on the UCD Professional Diploma in Creativity, Innovation and Leadership will:

Develop an Entrepreneurial Mindset
By enhancing the creative confidence of participants and learning to think like an entrepreneur but within an organisational context (intrapreneurship), participants will build their capacity to identify opportunities of value, to develop, share and iterate these ideas; and to engage the strengths of colleagues to execute these ideas for the benefit of their business.

Acquire the Skills to Innovate
Participants on the UCD Professional Diploma in Creativity, Innovation and Leadership will learn to use proven approaches to strengthen their business acumen and to foster a culture of innovation within a business. Course participants will learn to:
Identify and critically evaluate ideas of value from customer insights;
Collaborate in a way that plays to the strengths of others;
Communicate in an engaging way to engender support for new initiatives;

Practice Proven Tools and Methods
Participants will practice step-by-step methods (e.g. Design Thinking, Value Proposition Design) to put their newly developed innovation skills to work quickly and start making an impact.

How will I Learn?
Participants will "learn by doing" from an international, cross-disciplinary team of entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and academics through the UCD virtual learning platform and the Zoom online collaboration platform.

Innovation Project - Deploy New Skills Quickly
Participants will be required to undertake an innovation project to apply their newly developed skills and utilise a toolkit of approaches to solve a problem relevant to their business. By embedding an innovation project as part of the formal learning of the course, not only will participants have the opportunity to practice their skills but they will have an opportunity to prove the viability of adopting these low-cost, rapid, design-led approaches to innovation to their peers and seniors. Participants will receive innovation coaching towards the implementation of this project from the UCD Innovation Academy Entrepreneurial Specialists.

Learn from a Highly Experienced Team, Embedded in the Innovation Ecosystem
Over the course of a decade, UCD Innovation Academy has developed an extensive, deep network of relationships across the SME, Corporate, Not-for-Profit and Public sectors. Our team of Entrepreneurial Specialists are themselves practising entrepreneurs who are immersed in the ecosystem. With the UCD Professional Diploma in Creativity, Innovation and Leadership, you will build your capacity to become an Innovation Leader while developing the skills and tools to foster a culture of creative thinking in your workplace. Participants returning to employment will enhance their CV, gain business acumen related to critical issues facing Irish businesses such as Covid-19, Brexit and digitisation (making them more attractive to prospective employers facing these issues in particular) and join a network of emerging innovation leaders.

Participants in employment will take on new responsibilities (i.e. leading business-critical projects), and/or gain promotion within their existing business and increasingly work directly with senior management.

Timetable Info

The first two modules of this course are delivered in five-day blocks. Classes run from 9.30 to 4.30 each day and as the programme involves continuous assessment, participants must attend all class sessions. Mornings will be live online sessions and the afternoons will be a mixture of self-directed learning, reflective learning and group or individual work. As the programme involves continuous assessment, participants must attend all class sessions.

Module 3 runs from 2nd December 2020 to 26th March 2021 and there there are no classes during this module. It is a combination of external project work along with three mentoring sessions with one of your facilitators culminating in the Action Learning Project presentations on 25th and 26th March 2021.

Throughout the roughly 5 month duration of the program, there will be additional hours of student effort comprising of self-directed learning, reflective learning and group and individual work.

Module 3 - Professional Practice (Action Learning Project - Innovation in the Workplace)
2nd Dec 2020 - 26th march 2021
There are no classes during this module.
This module is a combination of:
1. External project work and
2. 3 x mentoring sessions over the course of the module. These will take place on the following dates: Dec 7th/8th; Jan 28th/29th and Feb 25th/26th.
3. Presentations - The final action learning project presentations will take place on 25th and 26th of March 2021

Participants in this programme are required to attend all class sessions.

Delivery Location

This course is delivered as a fully immersive online experience using a combination of UCD's virtual learning platform and the Zoom online collaboration platform and other tools for collaboration online.

This 20 ECTS course consists of three modules.
