About this Course

The Department of Business, Enterprise & Innovation quantifies skills needed in Enterprise Education as creativity, innovation, risk-taking, ability to plan and manage projects, achieve objectives, awareness of context and ability to identify, create and seize opportunities.

This understanding of the skills necessary for entrepreneurship has informed this Programme, which has consistently had a hugely positive rating from previous participants during the 2017/18, 2018/2019 & 2019/20 Springboard+ process.

The Entrepreneurs Programme leading to an Advanced Certificate in Management Practice in conjunction with Ulster University is specifically designed for budding entrepreneurs at conception stage or very early stage of forming a business. The programme aims to provide these cohorts with practical skills and knowledge across several areas including developing your business idea, finance, personal effectiveness, resilience, sales & negotiation.

The Programme uses a combination of University academics and industry expert trainers who have previously worked with Irish Times Training on the AIB Start-up Academy and on our 2017 / 2018 / 2019 programmes and have extensive experience of working with and coaching entrepreneurs.

Students will explore a range of experiential and blended action-based learning through structured group-based brainstorming techniques, interactive workshops and a selection of different industry-specific case studies. This will be enhanced with trainers and academic speakers.

The programme consists of 11 modules, 3 of which are accredited, compulsory modules which focus on key business skills in line with the Government's 4 critical areas for development. The course includes "The Future of Work" module based around the changing business environment and a new module on "Resilience for Entrepreneurs"

The programme will be delivered virtually over 2 half days (9.30am-12.30pm) per week for 18 weeks.

- Fill in knowledge gaps to enable you to feel confident in running your business successfully.
- Learn how to market your business, how to pitch your idea to potential investors and how to negotiate successfully.
- Understand how to adopt emerging trends in the workplace in your business.
- Leave with a well thought out and actionable business plan.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a minimum Level 5 award. In addition, applicants should ideally have basic computer skills.

Applicants without a Level 5 award will be considered on the basis of approved prior experience and learning (APEL).

In addition to the above all applicants must be available to attend virtual classroom lectures for 2 x half days per week for 18 weeks.

All participants may be required to submit a letter / statement signed by a Commissioner for Oaths confirming their recent employment history.

Long Description

There are 11 module subjects as well as coursework of three x 1,500 word assignments (one of which will be a Business Action Plan).

INDUCTION
This first welcome session will include an overview of the programme and the learning outcomes as well as an induction to Ulster University and their range of online supports including the digital library which all students will have access to.

MODULE 1: PRESENTING YOUR BEST SELF
This module is tailored specifically to help you present yourself and your idea in the best way possible, by identifying your strengths as well as potential areas for self-improvement. You will begin by focusing on effective communications and speaking to your audience and then participate in workshops on portfolio/CV preparation, preparing your LinkedIn Profile and creating a 2 minute elevator pitch in addition to one-to-one coaching sessions on pitching for funding and presenting your sales pitch.

MODULE 2: PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS - ENTREPRENEURIAL COMPETENCIES (ACCREDITED)
This module focuses on the individual; their mindset, entrepreneurial competencies, perceived strengths and areas for development. Entrepreneurship competence is increasingly recognised by governments as a competence for life, relevant to personal development and fulfilment, as well as an essential skill for initiating new ventures.

Self-discovery through the use of Entrepreneurial competency frameworks (such as EntreComp, the European Entrepreneurship Competence Framework) and a series of self-analysis questionnaires and psychometric profiling provides participants with useful insights that will form the basis of their Personal Development Plan (PDP). The PDP will then be utilised throughout the duration of the programme by exploring how it can be implemented in practice for individual success and business growth.

MODULE 3: STRATEGY – REFINING YOUR BUSINESS IDEA
This module is designed to help you turn your idea into a fully functional business. Strategic development looks at the overall purpose and direction of your business, taking into account the decisions needed which reflect the future, scope and competitive position of your business. The programme emphasises the need for a holistic perspective of the strategic issues to ensure longevity and sustainability of your business.

MODULE 4: MANAGING THE MARKETING FUNNEL
The module will explore what channels you can use to reach customers and how a funnel can be built and optimised from raising awareness of a product or service to developing viable leads and converting those leads into sales. You will develop an individual marketing draft strategy to grow your profile and revenues with a measurable cost of customer acquisition.

MODULE 5:DEVELOPING YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE
Just like off-line stores, each successful eCommerce (online) brand has its own unique character and characteristics based on a compelling consumer proposition. Which kind of e-commerce business are you going to be? This module will provide examples and reviews of successful eCommerce brands, how they’ve taken advantage of the internet to grow their online sales through consumer engagement, value proposition, business model (e.g. subscription for repeat purchase, pricing etc.). You will also learn how to manage consumer relationships and transactions online to enhance consumer experience, drive satisfaction and encourage consumer loyalty.

MODULE 6: DRIVING CUSTOMER TRAFFIC
How do you ensure that you attract your target customers to your website? This module will explore techniques you can use to drive quality traffic to your website (Social Media Marketing, SEO, Online Search, Display & Affiliate Advertising, Email Marketing etc.) and how to use Deals Management to its best advantage (Groupon, Living Social etc.). There will be a focus on customer segmentation, personalisation & measurement throughout. Finally, you will learn how to prepare a marketing campaign for your business which focuses on managing your budget effectively, analysing results and maximising your ROI. Topics include; (SEO, email marketing, social media, online advertising, analytics and preparing a digital marketing plan).

MODULE 7: THE FUTURE OF WORK - VALUE CREATION IN THE NEW WORLD OF WORK (ACCREDITED MODULE)
The digital revolution is a human revolution. While new technologies are what’s driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution, ultimately it is people who will bring it to life in businesses (World Economic Forum 2020). The way work gets done is changing and accelerating with the emergence of technology and the use of alternate employment models. Entrepreneurs today need to be equipped to understand the integration of technology in workplace in order to create value in the new world of work.

Participants will identify significant changes in work and explore relationships among these changes, before evaluating the impact on individual workers and small businesses. Students will learn how to establish value propositions to gain an understanding of social and economic value creation in a many-to- many context involving multiple actors, networks and stakeholders. In the era of a globally connected business workforce, the dynamics of entrepreneurial business growth have changed dramatically. Students will apply these dynamics and strategies to their own individual business.

MODULE 8: RESILIENCE FOR ENTREPRENEURS
This module is new to the Entrepreneurs programme for 2020/21, and will address the skills and attributes required to build resilience. Resilience is beneficial both personally and professionally, and will enable you to deal with setbacks and manage transitions. This personal strength is valuable especially when setting up a business. You will learn to identify the personal characteristics of resilience and focus on overcoming challenges to reach your long term objectives.

MODULE 9: SALES & NEGOTIATION
Convincing prospective customers, investors and partners is the key task for every business, irrespective of whether the focus is business to consumer (B2C) or business to business (B2B). This module will help you rethink your approach to selling and pitching, and help to close sales and deals.

You will learn how to profile your customers, identify their needs and build a compelling case for why they should purchase or partner with you. You will also explore the psychological power of persuasion and learn how to use proven tools and techniques to achieve results.

MODULE 10: FINANCE FOR START-UPS
This module outlines the financial and accounting fundamentals on which a business depends. It will help to put your business on the firmest financial footing possible and will cover topics including; Accounting Principles and Financial Reporting, basic Book-Keeping, Profit and Loss Account, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statements.

MODULE 11: MANAGEMENT PROJECT - ACTION PLAN FOR START-UPS (ACCREDITED MODULE)
In this module, you will learn how to design and build a model for business growth and plan for success in a highly dynamic business environment. This module will enable you to understand real-world project management and investigative skills required to create and realise value in a new business venture, analyse it and make recommendations for improvement. A successful action plan for start-ups is dynamic and enables people to act and transform ideas and opportunities into shared value.

This module aims to integrate innovation, value co-creation, and entrepreneurship theory and practice by analysing real life business examples from industry exemplars as well as formulating the development of your own innovative business model and dynamic action plan. Students will also gain an understanding of social and economic equity creation and capture in a many-to- many connected ecosystem context involving multiple actors, networks and stakeholders.

Timetable Info

Classes to be held online 2 mornings per week for 18 weeks (Thursdays and Fridays). Hours will be 9.30am - 12.30pm. Learning will primarily be through live lectures with support learning through Ulster University's online blackboard.
