About this Course

Mechatronics is a combination of mechanical, electronic and software engineering. The purpose of this field is the study of industrial instrumentation and automation from an engineering and technology perspective with the aim of developing a strong knowledge of controlling advanced hybrid mechatronics systems.

Graduates with a good grounding and understanding in this field can look to a bright and rewarding career. In an era where it is necessary for manufacturing industries to be located in less expensive environments, the advanced technical communication techniques and skilled workforce created with this level 7 programme would allow such manufacturing industry to be controlled in Ireland, keeping the high skilled jobs in Ireland despite the migration of unskilled jobs to other countries.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have completed a NFQ level 6 or level 7 engineering programme or equivalent for entry to this programme. The Institute's policy in relation to recognition of prior learning (RPL) also applies.

Long Description

The modules to be completed as part of this programme will include:

Analogue Electronics;
Digital Electronics;
Electrical Power Systems;
Embedded Systems (Engineering);
Instrumentation; Monitoring and Control;
Operations Management.

Why Choose This Course

“I am employed full-time as a maintenance technician for Intel and also work part-time for Dublin & Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board & City of Dublin Education and Training Board. The main reason I chose this course was the duration and the online classes, due to my busy schedule it gave me the option of doing classes to fit around my work and family life.

About 90% of the classes I watched where recorded on blackboard and 10% live. The lecturers where brilliant at replying to emails on any topics in the recordings and very understanding. The recordings are very good and great for re-watching before exams and there was plenty of content for revision, I would highly recommend this course”.

Certificate in Mechatronics

"Having been out of full-time education for nearly 30 years following a busy career in developing a business, IT Tralee gave me the opportunity of getting back into education in a way that fit with my schedule. Through the online learning platform, I was able to follow the field of mechatronics which is relevant to my business sector. If you miss the live event, the online platform lets you review lectures in your own time. Continuous assessment encourages learning at a manageable pace. For anyone who is thinking of going back to further their education IT Tralee offers the perfect avenue."

Career Opportunities

The high technology manufacturing sector is particularly singled out as being critical to economic growth. The government has emphasised the importance of developing a smart economy. A smart economy will enhance our capacity to maximise regional, national and/or international business opportunities. Within Ireland, the Institute of Technology (IOT) sector traditionally has had excellent links with industry. This relationship provides a means of developing innovative collaborations, to assist both industry and the broader economy to keep pace with evolving global requirements.

Mechatronics has a crucial role to play in Ireland's capacity to develop and adapt to evolving global manufacturing requirements, which is of central importance in the smart economy. Third level institutions in Ireland need to develop effective science, engineering and technology courses as well as research activities capable of developing and adapting to, world class technologies. A greater number of technological entrepreneurial graduates will put Ireland in a stronger place to create more global Irish companies. It is the creativity of technologists and engineers and their ability to invent new products and services that will drive Ireland's future growth.
