About this Course

This part-time blended learning course at level 6 is ideal for construction industry employees to upskill in Building Information Modelling (BIM) using Autodesk® Revit®.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to an overflow of applicants for our first intake (September 2020), we are first interviewing these applicants we already have on our list for this intake. If after that, we still have places available, we will open up for further applications.

As the qualification is set at Level 6, it is not a prerequisite to have a formal qualification in the construction sector. It is also suitable for unemployed individuals and empowering women in the home who would have an interest and aptitude in the construction and design industry to re-enter the workplace.

The course comprises 3 units from the BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Construction and the Built Environment.
1. Building Information Modelling.
2. Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification).
3. Personal Professional Development.

Participants will learn how
• to apply BIM Level 2 to meet the current needs of the construction industry.
• to apply BIM processes for information management and collaborative work, ISO 19650, and a Common Data Environment.
• learn and practice the use of key BIM software,
• benefit from regular online support on BIM while in the workplace.

Blended learning course delivery will consist of online live participation weekly, and onsite participation in an Autodesk Authorised Training Center (ATC) every couple of weeks.

Classes (online/onsite) will take place one day per week over a 6 hour period. There will also be an additional evening online support session scheduled per week.

Group 1 classes commencing on 30/09/2020
Group 2 classes commencing on 08/02/2021

Moodle Virtual Learning Platform VLE will be used by learners/tutors for the online/onsite weekly classes, notes, resources, and materials, etc. to complete the course. The initial setup period will take place onsite in the ATC, then the learner will continue their weekly classes online live through Moodle, and every couple of weeks will attend the ATC to engage with the tutors.

There is a 12-week work placement using BIM, for participants not already employed. During this, the weekly evening online tutorial session will continue to give support.

This course is ideally suited for building professionals wishing to reskill or upskill in BIM. It is open to individuals with knowledge or experience of building construction without having a formal qualification also. Participants may be employed or unemployed. Selection will be interview-based.

This is a blended learning course with online delivery, it is necessary that each participant have reliable internet access, as well as a computer/laptop meeting the minimum specifications to run Revit 2021 products (for details, see:

Objectives

This course is designed to prepare participants with the knowledge and skills to work in the BIM environment in the construction industry.

Participants will:
• apply BIM Level 2 to meet the current needs of the construction industry.
• apply BIM processes for information management and collaborative work, ISO 19650, and a Common Data Environment.
• learn and practice the use of key BIM software

Entry Requirements

Candidates who have previous employment or education/training in the construction sector:
• Candidates who are currently employed in the construction sector and who wish to upskill in BIM
• A prior Level 5 or 6 qualification which includes modules related to the construction sector. (Level 5 or higher level
qualification in Architectural Technology, Renewable Energy Assessment, Structural Engineering, MEP or related fields)
• Candidates with a full leaving cert that includes Construction Studies, plus some experience or training in CAD to Level 5
or higher, would be considered for entry
• Candidates will be considered for suitability on the basis of prior qualifications, work experience portfolio and interview.

Career Opportunities

Learners will cover the module Personal Professional Development (ECTS 7.5). This module offers students an opportunity to investigate their creative future and enables them to investigate various roles within creative industries and develop a research portfolio and action plan that strengthens their knowledge and confidence when making career choices.

Job Readiness training begins with the induction of learners, they are introduced to and encouraged to:
• Attend assignment workshops i.e. how to write an assignment/report
• Learn about their individual learning style.
• Access assistive technology available throughout the college e.g. Read-Write Gold
• Attend the Mature Student Information Morning, learners are encouraged to develop supports and networks among themselves.
• Access the Open Learning Centre, learners can access support for their individual needs.

During the academic year learners will participate in learning and undertake work in the following areas:
• Career Interest Inventories which again helps learners reflect on their future career/job goals.
• Workshops on motivation, study skills and time management.

Learners will

• produce a portfolio of evidence of job readiness by undertaking a comprehensive skills audit and creating a professional CV and letter of application.
• look at interpersonal communication by developing job-ready interview skills.
• focus on the development of Networks through attending career fairs and creating an online profile.
• have access to a tailored jobs club for 2 weeks in June 2020 with practical training in CV preparation, online interview techniques and job seeking skills (courtesy of Northside Partnership)

Throughout the programme, learners have access to one-to-one career guidance and counselling to address their own particular job readiness needs.
Learners are also encouraged on a continuous basis to reflect on their own learning and job readiness which is achieved through writing a reflective journal.

RPL Information

Prior learning is the knowledge, skills and competence that an individual learner has already attained. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a method of assessment used by Colaiste Dhulaigh College of Further Education which allows learners to gain formal recognition (certification) for knowledge, skills and competence that they already have, howsoever acquired. RPL may require the learner to demonstrate or prove their learning through interview and/ or through compiling a portfolio. RPL allows the learner to:•gain entry to a programme: a learner may gain a place on a programme, based on the learner's knowledge, skill and competence, gained through relevant life and work experience or through previous certification. •gain credit towards an award: a learner may gain a credit towards a major award using previous certification which is recognised by QQI.•attain an award: a learner may be awarded a major or minor award on the basis of previously acquired learning for which they do not have a formal certificate.
