About this Course

This special purpose Diploma in Retrofit, Conservation and Sustainability programme addresses a unique and current need for professionals within the construction industry and related areas to upskill their current knowledge.

The programme aims to provide the applicant with specific skills to engage innovatively, creatively and with technical competence in the redesign and re functioning of the existing built environment.

Complying with Irish legislation in the form of health and safety and building control demands significant specialised skill relating to accessibility, environmentally sustainable design, conservation and delivering project safely in accordance to the disciplines duties.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the programme are:
Applicants to the programme must meet normal QQI requirements, Level 7 or equivalent, award on the National Framework of Qualifications.

The applicants require a background from building design and construction related programmes or a cognate discipline or relevant work experience from the built environment.

Each potential learner will be required to attend interview to establish suitability.

Long Description

The Diploma in Retrofit, Conservation and Sustainability addresses the increased awareness amongst practitioners in the design, architecture, conservation and indeed the wider built environment community of a need for environmental sustainability. The programme introduces simple immediate measures that can be adopted by conservators to reduce the environmental impact of their practice.

The learner will be introduced to environmental sustainability policies as a guideline and will be shown how these measures are presented in the form of benchmarks to introduce steps that can be followed to achieve best practice.

This unique skill set will allow learners to innovatively and creatively redesign and reimagine existing buildings with a high standard of technical competence. This is achieved through advanced exploration of the basic concepts and practices of Retrofit, Sustainability and Conservation.

The course pays particular attention to developing the learner’s knowledge of health & safety protocols in line with Irish legislation. Learners will also develop an advanced understanding of building control demands including accessibility requirements, environmentally sustainable design, conservation and safe project delivery.
