About this Course

The Diploma in Lean Fundamentals programme will provide participants from diverse backgrounds with the requisite business knowledge, skills, mind-set, tools and techniques to become Lean practitioners. It is aimed at individuals interested in pursuing an educational and professional development in the area of lean that will provide an ideal pathway for candidates to become Lean practitioners. The programme has been developed in collaboration with leading Lean practice experts and industry exemplars to provide participants with the required knowledge and skills to allow them to contribute to their organisations operational excellence and continuous improvement strategies, and in turn help to enhance overall enterprise performance.

To be considered for entry onto the Diploma in Lean Fundamentals, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Applicants should have a minimum Level 6 qualification, in any discipline, along with a minimum of 1 years relevant industry experience; or, applicants who do not hold a Level 6 qualification may be considered on the basis of a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application to a Level 6 standard or equivalent provided they have a minimum of 1 years relevant industry experience.

Long Description

This Diploma in Lean Fundamentals is a one-year Level 7 programme providing participants from diverse backgrounds with the requisite knowledge, know-how, and skills, in Lean tools and techniques to become recognised Lean practitioners. It is aimed at individuals interested seeking educational and professional development in Lean and provides an ideal pathway to develop competencies in the fundamentals of Lean practice.

Irelands National Skills Strategy 2025 recognises that increasing pressure on resources require the development of core business, engineering, innovation and ICT skills with additional expertise acquired through specialisms including lean manufacturing.

The programme was purposefully developed in collaboration with industry subject matter experts and organisational exemplars to meet specified industry needs and to provide participants with the required knowledge, know-how and skills to enable them to contribute to an organisations operational excellence and continuous improvement strategies. The programme is aimed at operative, associate, and administrative level employees requiring knowledge and skills in the fundamentals of Lean.
The innovative use of work-based learning and an organisation-based improvement project enables live and practical application and integration of knowledge, know-how, and skills acquired on the programme.

The programme is completed over a twelve-month period and is fully delivered online in an e-learning format. The first nine months incorporate learning across eight modules; six of which are designed to deliver learning on lean and process excellence, with another two modules applying this learning alongside project management skills on an organisation-based continuous improvement project. For the final three months students complete and deliver their applied organisation-based continuous improvement with the intention of delivering tangible benefits to an organisation, including improved processes.

Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the programme, participants will be up-skilled to contribute to a continuous improvement team as a Lean practitioner, and as a result play an important role in the enterprise improvement strategy of their respective employers. The Diploma in Lean Fundamentals aims to achieve this through providing participants with the knowledge and know-how to successfully apply Lean thinking, the development and support to build key problem-solving capabilities, and the confidence to proactively engage in Lean initiatives. These competencies are highly valued by employers and will greatly assist graduates in their planned career progression.

Timetable Info

Module content will be released online on Mondays and Fridays. Content is primarily delivered by asynchronous recorded lectures and learning material that students access flexibly at a time that suits their busy schedules. Periodic synchronous online sessions are held facilitating student engagement with the academic team. All synchronous sessions are recorded and made available online".
