The aim of this Graduate Certificate in the Internet of Things is to provide graduates with knowledge, skills and competencies in the key areas of real-time signal processing, data analysis and machine learning, connected embedded systems and network programming to enhance career opportunities for graduates of the programme in the ICT sector. At all times during their studies, students will be provided with targeted academic and other supports.
The proposed Graduate Certificate programme has the following objectives:
1. To form in the students a critical awareness of the present-day state-of-the-art and current R&D at the forefront of a range of selected specialised areas in The Internet of Things, together with a knowledge and
understanding of specialised Electronic and Computer Engineering practice, methods and techniques.
2. To develop the student's ability to identify, formulate, analyse and solve engineering problems and to integrate knowledge, handle complexity and formulate judgements in relation to The Internet of Things problems.
3. To develop the skills to design components, systems or processes to meet specific needs, and the knowledge and understanding of analysis and design techniques and the ability to apply them in unfamiliar situations.
4. To allow a more intensive exposure to modern, industry-relevant technologies in the area of the Internet of Things.
Entry is available to Electronic/Computer Engineering or cognate discipline (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Sciences or other Engineering Disciplines) graduates with:
- An NFQ Level 8 qualification.
- An NFQ Level 7 qualification, with a minimum of three years relevant experience.
Both cases are subject to an interview if deemed necessary by the Chair of Programme or Head of School. Students who meet the minimum entry requirements are not guaranteed a place on the programme and DCU reserves the right to interview candidates to confirm their suitability for the programme. Non-Native English speakers must submit evidence of competency in the English language as per DCU entry requirements
An innovative Graduate Certificate, this programme addresses the emerging significance of the design and networking of Internet-connected embedded devices and technologies. It directly covers ICT topics related to this, for which a specific shortages were identified in The Forfas National Skills Bulletin.
- Internet of Things (IoT), IT Security, and Network Security skills.
- Software development in languages such as Java, C++, Python, along with web and cloud skills.
- Network programming and OS skills (e.g., Linux, Open Source).
- Systems and solutions architect skills
In addition, this programme provides strong exposure to the areas of Machine Learning, Data Analytics and Real-Time Data Acquisition and Processing, all of which are vital to the next generation of ICT technologies.
The specific modules on this programme are:
EE514: Data Analysis and Machine Learning (Sem 1, Level 9, 7.5 credits, 75% Exam, 25% CA)
This module will provide students with fundamental and advanced skills required for data analytics, including: data management, processing, summarization, and predictive analytics. It is focused on providing students with a strong theoretical foundation, along with the ability to make practical use of the advanced techniques in the field. The Python
programming language will be used for demonstrating the use of various techniques throughout the module, giving students practical tools for solving relatively sophisticated and broadly-defined real world problems in a well-established and widely-used programming environment.
EE515: Real-Time Digital Signal Processing (Sem 1, Level 9, 7.5 credits, 70% Exam, 30% CA)
This module will provide students with the knowledge, skills and competencies in the area of high-speed Digital Signal Processing (DSP). It is focused on providing students with both a strong theoretical foundation and the ability to make practical use of modern DSP approaches. It will also cover real-time engineering systems, embedded systems and DSP,
hardware for DSP and DSP programmable architectures.
EE513: Connected Embedded Systems (Sem 2, Level 9, 7.5 credits, 75% Exam, 25% CA)
Connected embedded systems are the building blocks of the Internet of Things (IoT). Connected refers to the fact that the systems interface to the real world via sensors and actuators, and also that the embedded systems can communicate with one another and to cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solutions. This module exposes students to state-of-art research and solutions for such embedded systems, including: embedded Linux, multi-platform SoC solutions, real-time interfacing, telemetry protocols for IoT, and messaging.
EE562: Network Stack Implementation (Sem 2, Level 9, 7.5 credits, 75% Exam, 25% CA)
The aim of the module is to introduce the students to advanced network programming concepts. They will study issues such as multitasking, multithreading, processes, inter-process communications and network communications. The module will address issues related to the programming of network equipment, including network device driver design, packet processing at layers two and three, router architecture, network signalling, firewalling and deep packet probes, network processors, and network support for unicast, multicast and broadcast.
EE402: Object-oriented Programming for Engineers (Sem 1, Level 8, 7.5 credits, 75% Exam, 25% CA)
Object-oriented Programming is a software methodology that is vital in the engineering workplace. This module will allow students to gain further experience in advanced aspects of object-oriented programming through implementation of design concepts in both the C++ and Java programming languages. Advanced embedded Linux based embedded
systems are introduced in this module. Each student completes an assignment using a system-on-a-chip (SoC) device, such as the BeagleBone that involves TCP socket communications.
OI501: Technology and ICT Career Success (Online year long, Level 9, 7.5 credits, 100% CA) pass/fail only
This careers-focused module facilitates students to build on their skills and knowledge in line with the development of their study of Technology and ICT. They will develop tools to allow them to market themselves and their skills to assist in enhancing their employability. This will involve an introduction to Career and Job Readiness materials, allowing students to engage in: goal setting, action planning, and development of personal development plans. Students will be supported in developing a professional profile to share with prospective employers and to signal their interest in an ICT career via relevant contemporary means such as: targeted CV development with cover letters, LinkedIn (or equivalent) online career portfolio development through engagement with, and research of, the technology sector. They will learn about relevant areas of the labour market so as to identify areas of potential employment.
While we have high demand on all of our Level 9 offerings, we are keen to be able, through Springboard support, to offer a purposefully designed course to those who are not in a position to embark on a full master's degree, or fund such an endeavor, but who wish to enhance their efforts to get back into employment, or improve their prospects within their careers.
We know from experience that programmes offered with a flexible mode of delivery (as the proposed one will be) are popular. All lectures are recorded for the benefit of students whose work or other commitments do not facilitate attendance, with course materials, discussion forums, tutorials and assignment work are made available via our virtual learning environment (DCU’s Loop online platform based on Moodle). While this is a bespoke award, it does provide a foundation for an MEng qualification, and routes to completing an MEng are available. The proposed Certificate will open up further flexible learning opportunities to graduates and, for this reason, it is also expected to attract interest.
In the general ICT area, The National Skills Bulletin, indicates a need for an additional 2,700 jobs in the ICT area, of which a significant fraction of these will be for professionals able to add value to organisations by understanding the importance of the emerging Internet of Things. Furthermore, the Guidance for Higher Education providers on current and future skills needs of enterprise report by the Expert Group for Future Skills Needs highlight key areas that are directly addressed by this course proposal. Companies that DCU work with and who provided an input into the development of this programme include Intel, Ambisense, Transpoco, NuWave and the Regional Skills Bureau, Dublin. Other organisations that have employed graduates of the School of Electronic Engineering include Vodafone, IBM, Google, Phillips, Microsoft to name a few.
In addition, DCU provides an integrated job readiness component (OI501, Technology and ICT Career Success at 7.5 credits), which will allow participants develop the necessary employability skills alongside their academic studies. The course will help participants to identify clear, realistic and practical steps to enhance their careers and to upskill to meet the identified skills shortage in the area of Internet of Things.
Finally, while this is a bespoke award, it does provide a foundation for an MEng qualification, and self-funded (ie not supported by Springboard) routes to completing an MEng are available. Please contact the programme chair, Conor McArdle for further details.
The course runs over two semesters, Sep to Dec and Jan to May, with a very flexible mode of delivery. It is possible to take all of the modules on the programme online. Normally, you will have to attend campus for your exams which will take place in December 2021 and May 2022; however, with COVID restrictions, the December exams may be taken online, while the May exams may take place on line or on campus, depending on restrictions in place at that time. In the event that participants do not complete all requirements of the programme at the end of semester 2, it is possible to resit exams in August 2022.
Online, the student location can be anywhere in Ireland.
A Welcome Day will be held at the start of the academic year where students meet with lecturers, tutors, and other learners. This may be on line in 2021 depending on restrictions due to COVID. Students receive comprehensive multimedia instructional resources, access to DCU’s online library resources, videos and banks of self-test questions. Lecturers are subject matter experts who provide academic support online and face-to-face.
Students have access to the full range of supports provided by DCU including access to Student Advisors, Careers Advisors, Counselling Service and Personal Development as well as a dedicated careers adviser for Springboard supported students. All of these services are available online
