About this Course

Today’s energy systems are highly interdependent and very heterogeneous. The infrastructure that supports the generation and distribution of energy is varied, complex and dependent on a range of practical engineering and geographical considerations. This complex infrastructure requires and understanding of a range of interdisciplinary concepts for its design, construction, operation and maintenance.

Key Features:
• Level 9 Masters Programme (90 ECTS).
• Developed in partnership with the Midlands Regional Skills Manager and relevant industry partners.
• Personal and supportive approach to teaching and learning.
• Problem Based Learning (PBL) based approaches will be used to challenge and expand the student’s knowledge, skills and competence.
• The programme addresses to a significant level all four key areas, which have been deemed by government as being of critical importance at this time: digital skills, transversal skills, management and leadership skills and the workplace of the future.
This programme has a thesis component that will require an engagement with (during the partner summer) in order to obtain essential data and provide exposure to
industrial practices.

This is a Springboard+ Funded Programme.

This programme will be fully funded for eligible unemployed applicants.

Eligible employed applicants will be 90% funded. They will have to pay 10% directly to AIT. The 10% payable is €900.

Entry Requirements

Applications will be considered from Level 8 Honours (Grade 2.2) graduates in engineering or cognate disciplines.

Graduates who hold equivalent qualifications in related disciplines or who have relevant industrial experience will be considered for places on a case-by-case basis in line with AITs RPL policy.

In line with institute policies, non-native English speakers are required to have an IELTS level of 6.5 or higher.

Long Description

This innovative Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Infrastructure is positioned within the onshore and offshore infrastructure sectors, focussing on the provision of renewable energy in Ireland. The demand for this skill-set is driven by the global growth of new energy sources and their associated infrastructural challenges.

The programme has a business appraisal aspect to it with classification and due diligence part of the syllabus.

There is a novel community energy development module which aligns with the governments sanctioning of 15 years of funding committed to schemes for power generation that are wholly community owned. Employers in the energy sector are seeking graduates with these skills.

The main themes that the programme addresses are renewable energy generation technologies and the co-use of renewable energy – power to X, energy storage technologies and economics, the regulatory aspects in line with evolving legislation, Project management -planning -development, Impacts on Communities – human health and wellbeing, inclusion in decision making, Community projects and de-carbonisation strategies.

The programme comprises of ten modules. The students will be instructed in and take part in the following multidisciplinary areas including: oceanography, benthic ecology and geophysics.

This programme also has a thesis component that will require an engagement with (during the partner summer) in order to obtain essential data and provide exposure to
industrial practices.

The programme will be delivered over two academic semesters in a blended mode, predominately through online lectures taking place in the evenings with additional focused practical sessions taking place in AITs state of the art laboratories.
